passing on a question from a friend - 08-13-2009, 12:26 AM

I have no idea about what the answer is to this question, so I am posting it on here.

My friend asks if there is a lens adapter for a canon rebel 2000 where she could fit the lenses to her canon powershot a590. I do know that there is a lens adapter for the a590, but I dont know about film to digital cameras.

Any info would be greatly appreciated.

From what I see on the advertisements, the Powershot doesn't have interchangeable lens capability.

I am not certain that I understand what you are asking -- so I am going to try to clarify in my words and you correct me where I am wrong?

She has a canon rebel 2000 (film camera) with a few EF lenses that she wants to use on her powershot a590, and is looking for an adapter?

If that is the question, then as far as I know, there is no such animal in this world. There are wide angle "adapters" and telephoto "adapters" to fit on the a590, but nothing that will allow you to attach a fully functional SLR lens.

Not sure what her motivation for this would be, but she would be cheaper all the way around of buying a gently used digital rebel (the original)

can be bought here:

Like Kent says, there is an adaptor for the Powershot, but it only allows a few lenses specifcally designed for the camera and adaptor...they are actually more akin to a teleconverter type thing, changing how the built in lens sees by putting another lens over it.

I found your posts on facebook with the question, and if she wants to use those lenses for digital, they will all work on any of the new canon digital SLR's.

Are you sure? My lenses from my canon film camera would not fit on my digital camera.

The kit lenses from my film Rebel 2000 fit my digital's my old 10D, my 5D and have not yet tried the 50D, but would assume they would fit. Maybe the rebel 2000 film camera had different lenses...that was my first camera...that would be were my cluelessness started!!!

I know my ae-1 lenses wont fit, but I've never had a rebel 2000. I do know those lenses have different fittings on them from 30+ years ago until now.

http://www.amazon.com/Canon-Rebel-20.../dp/B00001QEMF

The Rebel 2000 is a recent film camera and should have the same EF mount as the Canon Digital SLRs.

Confirmed from the Canon Website:

What Keith said. Any EF mount lenses for EOS cameras will work on a digital SLR without an adapter. What won't work are the digital-specific EF-S lenses on a film camera, or the higher-end Canon DSLRs (5D, 1D).

If it's the older Canon FD mount, they won't. But the EF ones will ... used my "old" (as in 10-12 years old) film lenses with my first Canon DSLR until I upgraded my entire kit.
