Any one ever been to SD? We are thinking of going there the last two weeks of September. We want to tour areas around Keystone and Badlands NP.

Any suggestions? What's the weather like?

Thanks so much!

Mount Rushmore National Memorial is that area. Can't help you on the weather.

The Badlands NP is pretty cool. The Dakota's landscape was waaaaay different than what I was expecting. I went a couple of years ago in late September and the weather was pretty good, but very cold and windy in the mornings. The wind can bite thru you like nothing you can experience here.

try and make it to north dakota while in the area so you can cross it off your list of states to go to. also, deadwood is in the area and the big memorial of that indian (sorry, it escapes me right now). my sister worked a boy scout camp one summer right where the memorial is. based on what she did at the camp, you can probably arrange for some type of caving adventure in the area.

I spent three years in North Dakota compliments of the U.S. Air Force. Grand Forks AFB to be exact. Miles and miles of nothing but miles and miles. Was born in South Dakota but Don't remember anything about it. At 22 month of age I was ready to head to THE GREAT STATE OFTEXAS

Thanks Debbi, that's exactly what I wanted to know. I'll be packing the scarves.

Conor, Not sure if we'll be able to make it to ND, but I did have the same idea about getting it crossed off the list while we're so close! And the Indian is Crazy Horse. I've heard they started working on it again.

Don, I am hoping that Badlands and Custer State Park will have something to offer besides nothing! I have pictures of my Great Grand Parents there in the 1930s that I am taking with me to try and recreate.

I was stuck in the eastern part of ND never did make it out west. However, about 30- 50 miles west of GFAB I heard that there was a hill. The bank of the last glacier lake I think.

You'll be closer to winter when you get there but the locals won't think so The Badlands are pretty cool. Lots of fossils recovered from there. Personally... especially if I hadn't been there, I would go to Big Bend for two extra days. The drive through Kansas and Nebraska is nothing special...

The Little Big Horn National Battle field is in Montana.

In addition to these, Wind Cave National Park is a nice day trip from Keystone. We were in that area in July.

We took the kids up there about 3 years ago and had a blast. South of Wind Cave Nat'l Park is the town of Hot Springs--so named because there is a natural hot spring that they channel into a pool. If you're into swimming and playing in the water, it's kind of a fun diversion for the kids for awhile. Not a water park by any means, but it's kind of fun.

Custer Battlefield--er, the Little Bighorn Battlefield--is near Hardin, MT and if you have time and are into history it's interesting, but if the kids are very young, I wouldn't plan on spending a lot of time there.

Take some clothes for warm weather, and some clothes for cold weather. We went up to Montana and Washington late last month; temps at night got down into the 40's-50's,with days in the 70's-90's, depending on where we were.

Enjoy. Wish I were going with you!

Is the Drug Store still there? Can't remember the name. Signs everywhere along the highway. Wall Drug.
