So how many iPhone users have done it.
I had a very bad experience with (i.e. I was really pissed at) Apple (and their so called "genius" people) and ended up going home and did the JB on my 3G that same day (about 2 weeks ago).
I love it.
Winterboard (customizable themes and icons)
Cydia (programs Apple "won't allow" in the app store)
SBSettings (easy on the fly adjustments to brightness and other settings)
Catagories (Folders - I know have all my apps and book marks on 2 pages/screens)
3G Video streaming
Tomorrow I will be playing with tethering (Probably end up using Modem, unless someone else has a better recommendation).
Downside: It does drain the battery a bit faster, especially when utilizing certain apps on it.
Overall it was very easy to do.
Apple can just stick their rules up their core. The iPhone is MINE not theirs and I will do what I want with it.

I did it on my first generation phone, but so far I have not done it on my 3Gs. I really miss winterboard as I had made some icons, customized a dock and had a few sweet backgrounds that I loved, but so far this time I haven't been as tempted.
I feel like 3.1 is right around the corner and I would hate to have to get back in the cycle of re-jailbraking every time a new firmware comes out. hmm who knows.
Interested to know what the bad experience was though.

My son is very good at JBing. He jailbroke my iTouch, and his, and was able to ssh into his Touch and mess with stuff....I was actually quite proud of it all. Then one day all my wifi signals started flagging.....would only stay connected for a few minutes/seconds at a time. I thought my 5 yr old Linksys WRT54G has finally kicked the bucket. A similar thing had happened a couple of weeks earlier with another WRT54G I had lent him to keep at his home. They would work perfectly as wired routers, you could connect to the wifi SSD but couldn't get to the internet. Both were running a 3rd party firmware that allowed me to up the mW's, among other things.
So, ordered a new router. It arrived a couple of days later and worked fine! That is until my son walked thru the door and all my wifi devices started flagging.
Finally figured out it was something with the newest jailbreak he had put on his iTouch that was causing RF interference with my routers. Doh! Now I have a couple of extra WRT54G's laying around.

p.s.- my iPhone 3G is NOT JB'd

I JBed my iPhone only a few months after getting one. At the time I was pleased with the functionality but I knew it had much more potential. Cydia allows for this.
- Winterboard: LUV IT! I can customize the UI as often as I'd like. Here's my current theme called iElegance Pro.
Charging screen
Locked Screen
Home Screen
More Apps
- 5-Row QWERTY Keyboard: This had to be my favorite app! Unfortunately it stopped working when I upgraded to the 3.0 OS. Just waiting for the update.
- Cycorder & iPhone Video Recorder: Two great video recorders, but I prefer the iPhone Video Recorder. It has more options and features.
- biteSMS: This app BLOWS AWAY the lame standard sms app included in my 3G iPhone.
- SSH and WinSCP: Have you ever wanted the option to transfer files to and from the iPhone? If so, then using SSH and WinSCP will allow you to do this.

Angel - I like the 5 icon home row also - forgot to put that on my list.
My bad experience with Apple:
I have some of the micro-cracks on my phone, and since it's a white 3G, it is noticable if you look. Just cosmetic, but a known issue with Apple.
Made my appointment to go in for a replacement (my 1 year warranty was going to expire in about a week), and the "Genius" checked it out and confirmed the phone was working OK (even did a diagnostic on it), and said, "OK, no problem". Then he did the flashlight check of the water sensors and accused me of dipping or dropping the phone in water. No way, never even been in the rain. Said water damage totally cancels the warranty and he can't replace it unless I want to pay for it. Even though the phone works flawlessly, and he admitted water damage would not have made the cracks.
I tried to argue about Houston's humidity and that there was no water damage, but it was a no go. So if my Warranty is screwed, then why not jailbreak (even though that can be restored to factory normal, thus no warranty problems).
Further web research shows that the 3M manufactured water sensors will turn pink in high humidty and only turn blood red when actually exposed to water (saw this on their docs). Mine are pink.
Apple knows this, but teaches their "Geniuses" to claim any non-white sensor means water damage and to invalidate the warranty.
I was tempted to do a bleach or fingernail polish fix to make the sensors white again, but I am too honest for that.

If you're willing to sell those WRT's at silly-cheap prices, I could use one for another client bridge ;)

I jailbroke my 3G mainly for winterboard and and the ability to customize the sounds. I like different email senders to trigger different sounds and such. But it seemed to be running slower and slower. It also reduces some security features built in. I haven't done a JB on my 3GS.

I think this was the site I followed for instructions: http://www.simonblog.com/2009/06/25/...using-redsn0w/
It's pretty simple & easy - just remember to backup your iPhone first, so if you mess up you can just do a factory restore and then restore your data and voila - back to "normal"

Do be aware that there are logs on the iPhone that will show it was jailbroken. I doubt that will impact your decision. I was surprised when I first sync'd my 3GS to get all my 3G data that it prompted me to produce a log and send it to Apple for info. I agreed, then saw the log entry for Cydia and the jailbrake. Just FYI.

I've JBed at least 30 iPhones, and never once been prompted to send any logs to anywhere. That said, I went back to the factory firmware on my original iPhone but only because I used exactly 0 features one gains upon jailbreaking. My iPhone is unstable enough with the factory software. One day, I will shoot it (and I'm talking about the shooting device I'm an expert with, not my camera). One day. Everything you ever wanted to know about Jailbreaking, and more

That article is hilarious, I've read it before. If there are legitimate concerns for the network, they are not from a security standpoint but from a throughput standpoint. AT&T simply lacks the hardware to handle every iPhone user having the ability to send/receive MMS. The phone is capable of doing so, but AT&T is not setup to handle it and that is the only reason it is not part of the official OS.
Personally, I hate my iPhone. It's easily the single worst, least stable, mobile device I've ever owned. If I still have one come next April it will only be because I cannot afford to replace it. | | | | | Thread Tools | | | | Display Modes | Linear Mode |
