I'm happy with what I have until something breaks and I have to replace it.
Ah, but the challange is in the atypical.

One should remember different lenses draw in different ways just as different formats render a scene differently. A photographer with many lenses and cameras is no different than a writer with a theasarus only in that the writer doesn't have to buy the words.

It ends when you start treating photo equipment as tools (think a drill or a hammer) and put 150% of your focus on the images you create. Only get new equipment is there is an image you absolutely cannot do with your current gear, and you plan to do images like that regularly. You know you no longer lust over equipment when your don't get excited about new gear from Nikon or Canon or Profoto - but you get really excited about your work. To create images is, or should be, the goal, not to get more and better gear.

Caveat - you need to have gear that's good to stop lusting over new gear.
