Will it ever rain again? - 08-22-2009, 01:13 PM

Well, will it? Will we ever see rain in more than a slight evaporative shower? Will it ever rain again here? Not for me, I have seen rain, but for the kids so they can say that they have seen rain just once....

I think yesterday afternoon Houston got what Dallas did. High winds, clouds that looked capable of spinning off a tornado or two, and heavy rain. Lasted a couple hours and soaked us pretty well. Sorry to hear you folks up San Antonio way missed out. Maybe next time.

We got an awesome storm here in Wharton County last night, too. It rained buckets and the lightening show was the best I've seen yet. I couldn't take my camera with me as my car leaks...I was soaked by the time I got back home. But if I could have taken it with me, I could have gotten some awesome shots. It was like a big game of Simon in the sky...just beautiful!

We need a good non-invasive and non destructive hurricane. Is there such a thing?

Must be really dry down there as evidenced by my... el cheapo, Mr. Skinflint, loves to see his utility bills come in at the base rate and even gripes about that, no a/c, only one light bulb on at any given time, even unplugged the refrigerator and water heater to save electricity, won't water anything and rarely flushes after every use, because it might actually add to his water bill... brother in law.
When the wife spoke with him this week, he'd even taken to watering the massive crepe myrtles in his yard because they were almost at the point of no return if he didn't. now, THAT'S dry...

At least we don't have dust storms like in the great drougth of the early 50's. It lasted 7 years. A great novel about those years is Elmer Kelton's "The Time It Never Rained."

I don't mind a kickin' good storm, but I sure don't want to go through the likes of Hurricane Hugo (September 1989)again. I almost became a widow and childless at age 24 thanks to Hugo and we were just over 200 miles inland from where it made landfall.

Until Hugo, I felt safe and secure when I heard these storms were brewing. Now, I know their power and the possibilities.

We are storm chasers, and they excite the heck out of me, but I'll never look at hurricanes the same again since Hugo.
