Fashion photography in Houston to be or not to be? - 08-27-2009, 12:32 AM

Riddle me this Batman why isn’t there any fashion photography in Houston, not only fashion but anything creative in regards of photography? Is it possible I’m just in the wrong place in Houston or maybe it’s taking a nap? If that’s the case why so many people I’ve talked to say the same thing that fashion simply has no existence in Houston. Well I refuse to believe that’s possible and the only means of making a profit as a photographer is to take weddings, sports, or family portraits. I’ve done it all before it’s boring as all hell. I don’t mind doing it to establish a name but I honestly can’t see myself taking a talent that God himself given to me just to do what PAY THE BILLS. If that’s the case why not quite now and go back to school and become a computer nerd. I don’t think it’s impossible but it will be a challenge. I’ve been told to take my work to New York where fashion strives and creativity is a thick as the crowed streets. Well the main reason I’m not in NY I’m not a professional, I don’t have an established name, and most important they’ll eat me alive and spit me out. I’m no fool I do have a dream of being a fashion photographer but I’m always honesty with myself and have a realistic goal. As I said before I’m not a professional nor will I ever consider myself to be one I’d rather those who view my work call me that. I was told by a member of this site in order to become well known my work has got to be as good as or better than the pros. My thing is I have no intentions of competing against another photographer trying to declare whose top gun but to compete again myself. Doing this is why I feel I’ve improved over the last 4yrs I’ve been doing photography. I don’t want to be the best photographer in the world but be the best at what I do. That’s the reason behind Photo Studio Houston a door way for other just like me who has a burning desire to create something new something different not one to follow but lead themselves and others to new possibilities. My goal is a simple but difficult one; turn this passion into a full time career.

We haven't met, but I have met Bill, and I have seen his creative work first hand, so I know he is as capable as any photographer I have personally met, so it would seem that you have some dancers joining you on the photography side.

What you need to do is find out who is shopping their images out to the creatives in New York and Chicago, and appeal to their Texas pride and their desire to keep it local.

you've got big oil down their in Houston, and I am sure there are a few others that just don't know you exist.

A quick search turned up the fact that Men's Warehouse is HQ'd in Houston.

Maybe you take crap jobs, but it doesn't all have to be about headshots.

There have got to be a hand you can shake, or an ass you can kiss to get a break, but surely you can be ready when the big break comes...

When it does, make sure you are one of the ones still dancing.

Thanks for your words your right I just have to keep it in Houston. As for kissing ass I do have large lips but that's not their function or purpose. I'm talking to a few business already the plan is in motion and I still got my groove.

You just need to do what Lara Jade did: http://www.myspace.com/larajadephotography. Of course, she's based in Europe, but she's 20 years old and has developed quite a name for herself. She started with self portraits which amazed everyone. She is so creative and started doing fashion, edgy, creative shoots with models. She did everything on them, the photography, the makeup, and the creativity behind the shoots. She posted on MySpace and other places. Her work got her noticed and now she's extremely successful at age 20, traveling the world. Just go out and start developing your style and portfolio, make it yours and different, and it will open up a whole new world. Make the Houston fashion world come to you. Just my thoughts.

Kent and Nicholas....there are actually a few corporate HQ here.....

Mens Warehouse
Academy Sports and Outdoors
Palais Royal...(Or know everywhere else in Texas as Bealls Department Store)

I have asked my wife the same thing.....you have it on the East Coast NY City...the West Coast LA....so why not....I think Houston would be a good city for this.....

Her answer is most of the companies here cater to the every-day person....not the Couture Culture....but the everyday people keep the companies in business....

So I would not mind trying to help spin this....we have some very good models around here...and some high end shops....as well as some big company presence....

My wife works for Academy in there Mens Apparel Area....

She's damn good. I'm working on improving my style and trying different things and surrounding myself with individuals like myself.

As I told somebody else I'm working with an establish company here in Houston. They want the normal pictures which I'll do for them but advice them to step out the box and do something different. I think people here need somebody to stand out 1st then they'll follow. What I'm saying I have to be a trend setter. Trust me I'm not into fashion dressing up wise but I do appreciate the art and creative styling behind it.
