I find myself attracted to cemeteries. Quite, relaxing, an ocassional cool stone or two to photograph...dunno, guess just because it's peaceful and an escape from the hustle bustle...

It is peaceful. You feel safe there. I always find something I had not seen before.

And there is plenty of shade.....

OK! Got time for a cemetery story? A true one?
Paris, TX has a very large cemetery and in the older section is a very tall tombstone with the top being Christ carrying the cross. Upon closer examination you will find He is wearing cowboy boots!! No guff!! Seems the family (mid 1800's) hired a sculpter to do the stone. He died before it was finished and they had to hire a second sculpter to finish. He didn't know how to do bare feet in sandals, so he did cowboy boots!!!

Pecans In The Cemetery
================
On the outskirts of a small town, there was a big, old pecan tree just
inside the cemetery fence.
One day, two boys filled up a bucketful of nuts and sat down by the
tree, out of sight, and began dividing the nuts.

"One for you, one for me. One for you, one for me," said one boy.
Several dropped and rolled down toward the fence.

Another boy came riding along the road on his bicycle. As he passed, he
thought he heard voices from inside the cemetery. He slowed down to investigate. Sure enough, he heard, "One for you, one for me. One for you, one for me."

He just knew what it was. He jumped back on his bike and rode off. Just
around the bend he met an old man with a cane, hobbling along.

"Come here quick," said the boy, "you won't believe what I heard! Satan
and the Lord are down at the cemetery dividing up the souls."

The man said, "Beat it kid, can't you see it's hard for me to walk."
When the boy insisted though, the man hobbled to the cemetery. Standing by the fence they heard, "One for you, one for me. One for you, one for me..."

The old man whispered, "Boy, you've been tellin' the truth. Let's see if
we can see the Lord." Shaking with fear, they peered through the fence, yet were still unable to see anything.

The old man and the boy gripped the wrought iron bars of the fence
tighter and tighter as they tried to get a glimpse of the Lord.

At last they heard, "One for you, one for me. That's all. Now let's go
get those nuts by the fence and we'll be done."

They say the old man made it back to town a full 5 minutes ahead of the
boy on the bike.

I'm new here (this forum). I would love to visit Glenwood. I've recently started to try HDR and I think that would be a great place to use it. Does anybody have any photos of that area, perhaps even some HDR's? Would love to see what it looks like since their site is limited picture-wise.

Do they allow tripods?

Thanks

John,

First , Welcome to the site!!! It is generally a very friendly place.

Top bar of this page, 3 over from the right is the search feature.

Type in Glenwood and enjoy.

If that does not work reply here and I will post some links for you.

Kevin,

Thank you for the suggestion. I looked and found a few good links with photos - sounds like a great place. I did not see any HDR photos so I may give that a shot (no pun intended). I'll post some shots once I go.

Thanks again,

Mr. Shneeblie

Last Saturday 3 of us were no more 20' apart. We all had tripods. We all had cameras. Some of us had bigger cameras than others. I always wave to the security person cruising around in his truck. We've never been hassled. We do behave ourselves.

Its worth mentioning that it is very well patrolled. It feels safe there.

There are no restrooms.

Post up when you get something. I need to develop and post from this weekend.

I too have always been drawn to cemeteries, partially because of the artwork of many of the stones and partially the history and partially the serenity and peacefulness. Glenwood has a lot of history. If you stop off at the office, they have pamphlets with all the noteworthy plots marked along with a short paragraph about each person.

I have been thereat least a dozen times and have never had a single problem with the staff.

Glenwood has so much to photograph...weeping angels, angry angels, the cubes, fishy, the oak tree, and all the names of the Houston streets. I've heard of another cemetary near Glenwood which was rumored to be a slave cemetary. It's the anti-glenwood, as there is no upkeep with over grown weeds, over turned monuments, and it's on a hill side to the bayou.

Wouldn't that be a wonderful photo opportunity, and a great way to pay them back for their contributions to this country as well? Before, during and after clean-up pics of the abandoned cemetery....I think that it could be an awesome project for a group of people. Sometimes I wish that I lived closer to Houston...

Which reminds me, there IS an old cemetery here in Wharton that could use a little, ok ALOT of help. Maybe this Glenwood post has inspired my next series. Thanks!
