Random question about hanging photos - 08-30-2009, 09:33 AM

Just out of curiosity, say you are hanging multiple framed photos, like in a studio, and you've got some in portrait and some in landscape. Do you align the tops of all the frames around the wall, or do you center the landscape ones to the middle of the the portrait ones?

I feel like if the tops were aligned the portrait ones would hang down far and look odd. So I personally feel like having the landscapes run in the middle of the portraits would look better, but I just didnt know if there was a standard, picture hanging technique that maybe i just havent heard of.

Just wondering what you all do.

Brad -
Very good question, one I asked my daughter just a couple weeks ago!! She has a custom frame shop and does hangings (of photos of course) as part of her service. Her suggestion is to align the photos "on center" and the center should be about eye level or approximately 60". Tall or short, the eye levekl might change, but for the "average" person, about 60". BUT never let "creativity" slip by the wayside. I remember from a elementary school English class (some 50+ years ago), the teacher told us that "no rule is a good rule unless it has an exception." There, I hope that straightened that out!!

Best o' luck!
