Pretty much it's a open development camera platform where you can swap in parts in and out, allow you to program your own processor for it, and have every control over it (as contrary to not being able to modify current production cameras due to closed platforms).
I am a EE guy by heart, so I for one was very disappointed to see no development platforms associated with any of the nice dslr's (Canon/Nikon etc) out there (similar to the CHDK project for the Canon P&S).
The immediate application here is for computational photography, so I doubt any wedding or sports shooters carrying one around, but the advances here can definitely shake up the development model for current camera manufacturers to open up and speed development up.
