AT&T says the latest iPhone models will have the ability to send picture and video messages to other phones, starting Sept. 25.

Apple Inc.'s popular phone has lacked the ability to send messages using MMS, or Multimedia Messaging Service, since the first model was launched in 2007.

The original model still won't be able to send MMS. Its users will have to keep sending pictures in e-mail. The new feature applies to the 3G model, launched last year, and the 3GS, launched this year.

A software update this summer prepared the latest phones for MMS, but AT&T, the sole iPhone carrier in the U.S., held off on enabling the feature to make sure its network could handle the traffic.

I'm not really gloating... I never use it... I just think it's funny that a company like AT&T is just now getting around to that kind of technology. But I guess they have the iPhone, so they've got a captive audience.

What bugs me a little is the extra texting charge. I'm already paying $30/mo for the data plan. Why not just include texting in that? Because it's a cash cow for ATT. It costs them literally next to nothing to handle text messages.

So this starts tomorrow. Will my 3GS just allow it, is there software I need to install, does AT&T want me to enhance my plan (i.e. $$$)? I thought I'd read there would be an extra cost, but I haven't seen anything advertising the enhanced service in any way from Apple or AT&T.

Congratulations AT&T and iPhone, you're only about 7 years behind the competition.

The iPhone hasn't been out seven years so it's all on ATT.

Only that there really is no competition when it comes to the iPhone. Sure, they are really late on MMS, but have driven right past everyone in just about every other area.

All I can say is, I haven't missed MMS. And I have really enjoyed my iPhone more than my BlackBerry phones I've had.

But my question still stands. Will we just see the change?

I think some users have had MMS as test subjects. I'd assume from what I read that it just happened for them. Their icon changed, I think.

It also sounds like AT&T is concerned about the bandwidth taxing their system. Day one will be interesting. Glad I'm not at AT&T.

Sometime early this year I think. I just didn't have AT&T and didn't want to switch just to have the iPhone since we have been with Sprint for so long.

And that's my point! They are just now trying to catch up to the iPhone. Maybe one day they will make it!
