Shipping items and issues with packing - 09-08-2009, 04:30 PM

I sold a computer to a very nice lady in PA. A while back she had issues that I couldn't fix and she shipped the computer to me in a nice foam packed box. No issues we split the shipping.

Today, she shipped it back for some upgrades and tweaking and it was packed in a oversized box that was very flimsy and just a little newspaper for padding. I was in shock when UPS dude ROLLED it off the dolly like a pack of diapers. The box is beat to hell and the computer is loose inside.

I emailed her telling her that I postponed the delivery and sent pictures to her with the box.

What should I do? Refuse shipment?

Take it and let her know how bad it is?

I emailed her and talked with her but I am still weary about signing for it, the computer was $2200 and has 4 drives in it. We are talking about 45 pounds of computer that was flying around.

OUCH!

Even if she had insurance - it doesn't cover damage due to 'poorly packaged items'.

Because I'm an idiot - I'd probably take photos of it - and then take receipt of it to fix it. If it's something 'major $$' then she has the option of paying for whatever got broke during the trip. If it made it safely - bless her heart - then I'd tell her to buy a lottery ticket. ;-)

I'd probably get something in writing from her before I took receipt of it to CMA.

Good luck - let me know how it goes!

Holy crap. You took delivery of it I guess?

She'll need a new case - that's for sure.

That thing had to have been dropped from a decent height for the case to crack like that. Sheesh.

The case is solid steel, the whole rig weighs 45 pounds. The box was lined with newspaper.

I talked with the owner and told her the rig is destroyed. She has insurance and it was the UPS(store) guy who packed it.

Get this, it works!!! i am running it now. There are some tweaky issues with the SATA headers being bent and broke. But all is fine. The drive on one of the raid assembly clicks (bad sign) but that is a Scratch disk and can be replaced, The main drive is fine.

Not sure I'd trust anything in this box. Some issues may not show up for weeks or even months.
