Any chance the stupidheads went to the post office during their shopping spree? If so, ooooooooh they are in big trouble for sure. The Postal Inspector has that robot with a gun (at least the one in Florida did).
Also, since they made a purchase of some sort at the liquor store, that involves the TABC. TABC can *demand* the video and the store people can't refuse them.
But like Glen said, start with your local police department. They'll alert TABC, if it hasn't been done already.
I'm glad the bank was so alert!

My BestBuy Rewards card got closed on me 1/2 way through the day because "An unnamed vendor" may have had card information stolen, compromising my account. About two months ago the same thing happened with a Chase card. Very annoying. On the Chase card someone had made two purchases in Canada. This time I guess they were acting to prevent that.
Debit card is much worse. Sorry to hear that happened.

The US Secret Service is very active when it comes to this types of crime. Checkout this FAQ, maybe it can help you. http://www.secretservice.gov/faq.shtml2
But other than reporting the incident there is not much you can do unless you want to personally hunt down the perpetrators which will eat a lot of your time and resources.
I do feel your anger and its normal, you'll just have to be mindful on where you swipe you cards next time.

I had the same thing happen to me. I never lost my card or had it stolen. I filed a police report and the officer said that a lot of times this is happening at restaurants. When you put your debit card down and the waiter takes it to the back to swipe it...they have a second 'swiper' device (aka card reader) that they run it through and it grabs your number. They can then, put a blank card thru the reader and it picks up the number. Kind of crazy! The officer told me that I either should pay cash at restaurants, or walk with them when they go to swipe. Cash, thank you! :)

Skimmers are used to capture card information and in some cases it is stolen from a merchants system. There have been cases of POS machines being hacked as well. They aren't supposed to retain the complete card data and PIN, but sometimes do if the machine was hacked or the merchant isn't following approved procedures. So in some case, it just isn't your fault at all.
I don't know how it happened, but my credit card was used in Europe. My wife asked me about a charge, "that wasn't me" I professed. It turned out to be at a photography store, which sounded like me, but in Italy. (No, not Italy, Texas.)

| If TABC gets involved with it, they won't have any choice other than to be cooperative. Maybe it isn't their fault your card was stolen (nor was it yours)...but that doesn't give them permission for failure to comply with TABC. You shouldn't have to ask them for it at all...the big guys can demand it and they can't refuse.
And yeah, the store person was being a weeny, one that might get taken down a notch or two if he tries it with TABC. They don't play around.

We went through the same thing, and suspect that a skimmer was the culprit (as Andy mentioned). We were alerted quickly by Visa because the debit charges were large and unlike ones we'd made in the past. We weren't liable for them and got new cards right away with new numbers.
For awhile, we were cautious and only paid cash to places where the card left our sight. We've since relapsed into happy, dumb ignorant bliss until it happens again. For that period of time, we controlled our spending a lot more because we used only cash at restaurants. Even though it's a debit card and immediately deducted from our checking account, it's a lot easier to control your money when you're doling it out one piece of paper at a time.

Sad part is, merchants don't care and really won't do anything. They basically have "insurance" against this type of thing and it costs them more customers to be a PITA and look for id's and be concerned, than it is to lose some money on a bad deal once in a while. I know this because I have been there. It is so frustrating to me. Guess it is kind of like having a cell phone stolen and someone using it....it happens so frequently, the police just don't have the manpower to do anything about it, unless it is a "big" deal. Sad day in our world. BTW, I've had a debit card, credit card and checks stolen. Cards are super easy to take care of..checks...costs you lots of money and are a major PITA to clear up. | | | | | Thread Tools | | | | Display Modes | Linear Mode |
