Any Outlook 2003 gurus out there?-Update--I think I fixed it - 09-10-2009, 10:22 AM

This is a tough one. I've googled my ass off, and can't find a solution.

I tried to send an email yesterday that apparently had too many recipients (I think my ISP limits them to prevent spam). I recieved this error:

Task 'TMP - Sending' reported error (0x800CCC0F) : 'The connection to the server was interrupted. If this problem continues, contact your server administrator or Internet service provider (ISP). The server responded: 557 sorry, too many recipients (#5.7.1)'

That message is no longer in my outbox, but is "hidden" there. (outbox shows empty), and outlook still tries to send it. I still get the error msg every send/receive.

Any ideas how I can get it out of there?

I'll buy you a beer if you can solve this for me!

Thanks!!!!

check the SENT folder to find it. A limit on the # of recipients is common. You'll have to split the list.

Tom - the easiest way is to disconnect from the internet. When you do that - outlook can't contact your isp, so it won't try to send it. So you can go in and delete it.

Who is your ISP.....Outlook connects to them to send emails...it might be in their que.

Go into your ISP and check their out box.

In outlook you CAN do this....hit file>new outlook data file and create a new data file. This would circumvent any emails from going out.

Found a couple of possible solutions via Google search, hopefully these will help.

Possible Solution 1:
Use the Microsoft MDBVU32.EXE tool to forcefully clear the Outbox. The instructions for this are the same for when removing a stuck read receipt but instead of choosing MDB-> Open Root Folder, choose MDB-> Open IPM Outbox.

Possible Solution 2:
Do a Search for .dbx files.
Search:

* Start > Search > For Files or Folders > All files and folders,
In the field for: all or part of the file name
Key in:
.dbx
Below that, click on More advanced options
in the field: Type of File, select (All Files and Folders)
place a checkmark in:
* Search system folders
* Search hidden files and folders
* Search subfolders
click Search

Locate the Outbox.dbx file and delete it.

Reopen outlook and try sending a new test message to see if it leaves the outbox.

Not sure I understand why it would be in the sent folder (it wasn't) if it couldn't be sent. Wouldn't it still be in the outbox?

Sorry, but that's no help.

If you noticed, my OP said "That message is no longer in my outbox, but is "hidden" there. (outbox shows empty), and outlook still tries to send it."

So I can't find anything to delete--that's the problem.

I ruled out that by adding the same account to OUtlook on another PC--no problems sending and receiving.

Sure, but then my data file (.pst, right) would be empty. All of my contacts, emails, calendar items, etc, would be gone, right?

I have no outbox.dbx file.

I can usually (not always) send new messages, so I'm not sure if that would tell me anything. The odd thing is, I don't get the error every time.

Tom, try running ScanPST (located: C:\Program Files\Common Files\System\MSMAPI\1033\SCANPST.EXE - at least on my pc it is), and load the PST file that has the inbox, sent, etc folders. Outlook needs to be closed for this to run. I find that my PST files get corrupt every now and then. This tool will scan the file and repair any errors.

I concur with ScanPST...it fixes almost everything, except the problem you're having at any given moment :)

Also, there are a number of command-line switches. Some of which can be found here:
http://www.techgalaxy.net/Docs/Excha...3_switches.htm Although not sure if any there would help you there may be others that you can search for on the net.

Regards,
Sean

turn off your computer and go home for the weekend.

I don't drink alcohol either. I'll take a sprite.

I finally deleted the mail account completely. I used gmail as the host to download messages off the server, and then had Outlook connect to gmail. When I did, a message that looked suspiciously like the offending party appeared with this at the beginning:

This is an automatically generated Delivery Status Notification

Delivery to the following recipient failed permanently:

xxxxx@tx.rr.com

Technical details of permanent failure:
Google tried to deliver your message, but it was rejected by the recipient domain. We recommend contacting the other email provider for further information about the cause of this error. The error that the other server returned was: 550 550 5.1.1 - Invalid mailbox: xxxx@tx.rr.com (state 14).

Maybe gmail "shook it loose" from somewhere. I've since recreated that mail account, and it seems to be working fine.

Thanks to everyone for trying to help. It gives me something to try next time I have issues with Outlook.

Once you sent and the email server acknowledged, it'd keep trying to send till it timed out, normally from 3 to 5 days. That's probably what happened to you, even when your ISP rejected the # of recipients of the mail.

Back to my response....

If you create a new data file, drag and drop your inbox, sent files, contacts and calander into the new one....leaving the outbox behind. You can have multiple data files open at a time, ie. Archives and Outlook data files are independent of each other.
