When your 12 yo son kills an armadillo with a shovel and pellet gun while waiting for the school bus! Somehow, I'm hearing "You might be a redneck..." lol.

We knew we had a problem with this critter because he was digging up the flower bed daily and yesterday, our front lawn looked like a golf course after a tournament. I guess the little guy got his day and night a little confused because we've never found him out during daylight until this morning.

BTW, no I don't have pics. At 44, I still have never seen a live armadillo and today isn't any different.

Disclaimer: No, he doesn't have access to guns without us around. He has gone thru the Texas Hunter's Safety Course and has been deer hunting for three years now. He knows guns waaaay better than I do and he called his dad before getting the pellet gun and shovel.

Springtown isn't the middle of nowhere. Not even close. I am between Azle and Springtown. Well, I am if you live in the Springtown I am thinking of.

If your yard was good and tore up, you probably have an issue with grubs...

I wish he wouldn't have killed it. Could have trapped it and relocated it somewhere more appropriate, although I do understand somethings have to be done

Once had a co-worker convinced armadillos liked to sleep on their backs while lying on country roads... Told her that was why you see so many of them dead, they fall asleep and get run over.

You're right, Matt. It's not really in the middle of nowhere but it's hard to convince people otherwise sometimes. My brother thinks it's on the far side of the moon.

I agree, Kent. Not sure where to relocate an armadillo though. He is the neighborhood hero though as this critter has been causing havok for a while now.

Being Springtown.....it sounds like the bus-stop is at his gravel driveway.

At that age I was hunting with a 12 gage every. Go buy that boy a shotgun, killing a critter with a shovel and pellet gun is just too much effort.

Hey! Be nice. We have a concrete drive on a paved road - just ditches instead of curbs.

He actually asked his dad if he needed to get his .22. He has a shotgun but no one was home but him and he is not allowed to touch guns without an adult around.

By the time I was in the 8th grade, I had a 410 shotgun. Carried all over the east Texas piney woods of my Grandpa's farm. No one ever had any concerns with a young kid and a gun back then.... too bad it's such a concern these days.

Some guys were dove hunting the other day in the field next to work. People kept calling 911... cops came out, just to check things out, but mainly to explain they were were within the law to hunt on their own property.

It is sad to have such concerns now but things have changed. I'm probably more to blame for the "rule" but I didn't grow up with hunting or guns. I knew my dad had a gun for safety reasons and I knew where it was but to this day, I have never touched it. Our son is very safety conscious regarding guns. He told me yesterday that he had a heck of a time shooting the rascal because cars kept going by the house and he wasn't going to shoot in that direction - good for him! He did have a story to tell!

Debbie, I can't believe you have never seen a live one! You know where I live and Terry and I ran into one this AM on our walk and even when we moved and were in temp housing in plano, you would see them in the common area. Although there seem to be alot less than there were 30+ years ago. We would see them all the time on the drive to Austin after we hit TX state lines..
