Appartment Problems - 09-12-2009, 01:31 PM

ok so at my appartment the cable comes free and it its time warner, so since my wife goes to school we need internet (which we pay for seperately) so we got Time warner....well i have 2 computers one is our home PC and the other is an HTPC (home theatere PC) The HTPC is hooked up to our flat screen, it has a blue ray drive and is networked to pc so we can watch movies with out burning them to DVD's.....i said all that because we are having trouble with our internet so we thought it might be a wireless problem or netgear issue, well we had a time warner tech come out to the house to check everything out and he pointed it out that our wireless is flawless lol and everything is great, and he told me that we are not getting a good signal from time warners server...then i said "Great now fix it, i pay you too much a month to not get a good server signal!" and he replied " well its not our fault either" at this point i started scratching my head

well it seems that when the appartment owners built the place and installed the cable and everything, they did so on their own, with out a TW tech to hook everything up. So they just pay the TW for the cable each month and do their own maintenance.

Problem is, their wiring Job is a down right crappy one and we cant get a good signal because of it.....How do i approach my land lord with this situation? is it something they need to get fixed? or am i going to have to move to get better internet....

That seems to be the answer, the landlord took responsibility on themselves for the quality of the wiring...The landlord needs to have it repaired correctly...You're just the poor schmuck paying the bill every month and you should expect the quality of service you're paying for...Tell them so......Ben

Furthermore, check your contract to see how much of an out the managing company gives itself. I doubt that they provide you with a quality of service agreement but I would check for it.

ok so i spoke with my land lord and she told me that she just renewed her contract with time warner and they DID DO all the wiring, so i was furious with that last guy who lied to my wife...

I called time warner and simply asked for a manager, she put me on with the gentleman and in a calm voice i explained that i pay almost 60 per month for internet and that i dont have the internet, then i explained to him that i need my internet for work and my wife needs it for college, then i told him that the last man lied to us and the man before that didnt do any thing at all, so i continued to inform him that if the next tech didnt fix the problem or point out what i needed to do to get things working again that i would send him back with the road runner box and switch to at&t, not only that but i would go to court to collect all the months i payed for service aand the legal fees for taking them to court...well that must have turned on a light switch and they sent a very nice and accomplished gentleman to take care of things, he fixed the problem and pointed out that MY router was the problem so he helped me pick out a new router, waited until i went to wal mart to get it and then helped me hook it up when i got home....i am pleased

Jusselin, sorry that you had a rough time but glad it finally got worked out. I think the first tech should have been able to tell you that the router was a problem though.

Sadly, the communications, mainly Comcast, Directv, Dish Network, and I wouldnt be surprised, contract out their work. I'm assuming the first tech came in a non-Time Warner VAN, if so, then you got a contract tech which is wanting to get in and out of the job asap to get paid. More jobs they do, more they get paid, even if they have a 2 or 3 call backs, but if they turn over 4 or 5 more jobs, theyre ahead.

Sorry to hear about your frustrations, and glad that it was only your router and not the wiring.
