Are they trying to weed out beginners, or is it really that good? I mean c'mon. Seriously?

Prices are all over the place. It all depends upon who the classes are with. Some are worth it and other ARE NOT!
Which one are you referring to?

Why does it matter if it is over? You missed it! :)

The only ones I am aware of are for Photoshop and part of Kelby training and they are only $49 for the day.

Professional photography rule number 7.

Never, ever, charge somebody for your services using what YOU CAN AFFORD as a basis for your fee.

If $895 is too high, there are lots of other seminars for a lot less.
For instance, Studio Arlington charges $60 for a three hour seminar and limits the class size so that personal attention can be assured.

Some seminars are priced solely on the name recognition of the "celebrity" photographer who's giving the talk. Of course, being famous doesn't automatically make you a good teacher...

For that price, I would at least hope it's more of a workshop, with a smaller number of attendees and some opportunity for some one-to-one learning. I can't think of anybody, photographer or otherwise, that I'd pay $895 just for the privilege of sitting in a conference room at some hotel while they spoke to me and 500 other attendees.

I can think of a few that are worth that price, but unfortunately most of them are no longer living.

No, there is one coming up again in April 2010.

And to whomever asked about it being a workshop, it is. You do get hands on instruction apparently, and do go home with a lot of your own images.

I dont know... but I can promise you one thing. If I were to ever 'make it big', to a point where I was able to teach and pass along knowledge, I will do so without hesitation. When someone asks to be a tag along, or just sit in the studio to observe, the first words out of my mouth will NOT be "I'm too busy." And if I ever do get to put on a workshop, it wont be priced so that only the already established, or the independantly wealthy can attend.

I'm sorry, but for damn near $1000 I can get some very nice equipment and teach myself. Perhaps it will be a longer training period, with lots of trial and error, but I guarantee that THAT education will prove more profitable in the long run, than anything I can hurriedly try to gather in two days. For me anyway.

I mean seriously. Imaging USA isn't even costing me that much in January, and thats INCLUDING my airfare. And thats a THREE day seminar with a variety of classes.

I paid for a 1 day workshop with Joe McNally in New York in January. Had to pay for flight, hotel, car. It came out to much more than 800 and was worth every dime.

Imaging USA is like paying pennies for what you get. BUT you pay a membership too so if you consider that your costs do go up, (a little).

The workshop I would LOVE to take is actually around $1600 (the Anti-Workshop from Alt F). If I could ever afford it, it would be worth every dime spent. Some workshops are expensive, but well worth the money. And, a lot of the time, it's hobbyist that can afford these, not the pros since the hobbyists make more money in their day jobs a lot of the time.

Lets look at this a different way. These photographers charge $150 per hour to shoot pets. Lets say in two+ days you get 12 hours of learning time. They have the overhead costs, studio, equipment, insurance, transportation if needed, your breakfast and lunch etc.
SO you are paying $75 dollars an hour. That is half of what one of them would charge for a one hour session AND they will not make anymore money on sales since you are not buying any photos. Even though they will have additional students, it is not like they are making huge amounts of money over their regular session fees when you consider their costs. Doing one of these workshops is not even close to being as easy as it is to do a shoot. They have planning and arrangements that they have to do.

When you go home, you have your own Photos, forms, marketing templates already to go. You are getting to photograph so you have samples, you are walking home with a complete business ready to set up. This is like the idiots guide to "Your Pet Photography Business". This sounds like a heck of a deal. A complete business WITH personal training for only $895.

I perceive this as a great value. Just try and get another type of business set up for that amount of money! It won't happen.
