Where Do You Rank with Photography Snobs? - 09-20-2009, 08:23 PM

"Today, many photographers prefer to categorize themselves in self-assigned niches. News photographers hardly talk to sports photographers anymore. Everybody has their group, association, blogs, and forums.
Photography has its social classes, almost like a feudal society. It has its kings and knights, its jesters and courtesans, and of course, the peasants.
So where do you rank on the totem pole of photo-snobbery? Here’s a quick take, starting with the photographers most respected (by snobs) –"

See where you rank....

Hmm, I don't think I'm a snob, but I've done numbers 1, 3, 4 and 8.

Never a bad idea to specialize, but when it means cutting oneself off from the rest of the photographic world it's a slow death of one's growth and education. Everyone has something to share, everyone has something they can learn to do or do better. Can't we all just get along?

I've done a blog on this subject before. It is very interesting to me that certain photographers don't respect others. Commercial photogs look down on PJ's and PJ's look down on wedding photogs (at least until recently, when all the laid off PJ's had to start shooting weddings to pay the bills). It goes on and on, with one type hating another... I don't understand why, though.

The trouble in ranking yourself is that you have to prove that you deserve to be on that spot even when no one is challenging you.

So, I'd rather state that I'm at the bottom of the totem pole.

Of course, by stating so I just lost an opportunity to sell myself, to any future client, who is reading this post, about how I am quite capable in doing whatever photography service they need.

But then again, photography is not my main income source so I could probably live with the bad press.

I'm proud to have not engaged in any of the category activities mentioned. I think I'll try and keep it that way.

plagarizing a bit:

There are 2 types of photographers:
1) those who put photographers on a type/scale;
2) those who don't

Cool Where do I fit in? - 09-21-2009, 09:38 AM

3) I'm so old my label washed off.

But seriously.................

Yesterday I had some time to kill while Lisa stocked up at HEB. I photographed a newly constructed empty commercial building and added more photos to my inside the car wash series.

How does that label me? Huh?

I know, too old to be allowed out with a camera!
