Question Need help: New computer/office desk - 09-26-2009, 03:40 PM

It's time for a new desk. I've looked at places like Office Depot and Staples but haven't found anything that I like. Any ideas on other places to look for a desk for no more than, say, $300-$400 would be appreciated.

Sam's had a few good options, but that varies from location to location. Another place that can be fruitful is estate sales/auctions. Have some great furniture from some of those in my house. Your results will vary wildly based on inventory...

Check your local Yellow Pages (or equivalent) for businesses that specialize in used office furniture. There are times when the whole place is full of your standard grey metal desks and two drawer file cabinets and other times, you'll find some real jewels at heavily discounted pricing.

If you're interested, I have a desk that I bought in the box from Home Depot or Lowes a few years ago and have never even unpacked it. It's one of the furniture pieces that you put together yourself and supposedly has all screws, nuts, bolts, etc. that you need. A heavy bugger, I'd let it go CHEAP if you'll pick it up in Mesquite. In case you start thinking that "yeah, I could do that", be aware that you'll need a pickup and someone to help load and unload the box because it is some major weight...

Ikea man! Their desk setups are very cool. They have a bunch of different pieces in various styles and you pick the ones to make it look how you want.

The hubby and I built out a big 2-person desk from there. And I think it cost around $300 for the whole thing. Took an afternoon to put it together.

Thanks for most of the suggestions.

Amy, funny you'd mention Ikea. I looked at their site today and will be in Frisco tomorrow so I'll be stopping by there. Thanks!
