advertising on vehicle - 09-26-2009, 11:34 PM

Reading Cornbreads plight about the photo equipment getting stolen out of his truck just adds to a question I been wandering about.

Do you advertise your photo business on your vehicle?

While it makes a nice rolling billboard, it seems to me like its just inviting some a-hole into targeting your vehicle for POSSIBLE loot inside. Just wandering what the groups opinion of this adverstising is.

John, I used to advertise on the back window of my Jeep. I don't keep gear in my car, so that was not a fear for me. I took it off because the only time I got a contact from it was when I was in a parking lot at night. The guy was really nice, but it made me realize that as a woman, an attacker could potentially use that as a way to get close to me.

Where have you been wandering? Maybe around his vehicle, right before the gear was stolen?!? Now we know who broke into the vehicle!

I think you mean wondering...

On a serious note, I would not advertise that way. It just seems like a cheesy way to advertise. You aren't going to attract the best clients that way. It's not like you are selling Red Bull or Miller Lite, or something that people stuck on a freeway are going to think about.

True, our license plates back in Indiana once had the slogan "Wander Indiana", they took it off when no one could find where Wander, IN was.

what I was really referring to was something simple, like your website address displayed on the back window. nothing gaudy.

I have signs on my car.
I don't get calls directly from the signs.
They are there to keep my name out in front of YOU.
If I can put my name in front of more people, they will recognize me when they
are searching for a photographer.

I don't keep equipment in the car for extended periods. I'm either in the car with it, or it is on site with me.

When I arrive at a job location there is no doubt who I am and what I am there for.
Adds credibility, visibility.

The same people who wear embroidered shirts are the ones who put their business info on their car. Let's not go there again.

Cap'm Tom..you make an extremely good point. It probably could cut down on a lot of hassle from rent-a-cops and such if they no a "PRO" is on the job.

I agree with the Cap, with one catch. When you have your name on your vehicle remember that how you drive reflects on your business. I have a nifty little list of people I will never do business with because they drive like complete morons. I can not believe someone can be that much of an imbecile on the road and a good, professional business person.

Can't tell you the number of times I've had to withhold an expletive or two because I had my phone number plastered on the side of the car.

Keep in mind also that having that sign means that I can argue with the IRS about what percentage of business use I am claiming. Some will say that you are 100% advertising.....
