You have a point Stovall, and for advanced photographers that know the area well, this would probably not be a good idea. But I don't really have the time to explore many of these places and to do the homework in advance to know where to be at sunrise and where to be at sunset or where to be if it is an overcast day, etc. And I am still new enough to photography to be glad to have some instruction and helpful tips. Luckily I am still learning. When I stop learning, I will probably go find another hobby.
The local tour guides know the areas and can get you to the right place at the right time and the photography lead can help folks that need help. If you don't need or want help, most of them will just leave you alone to do your own thing. That's the beauty to me of these trips. You can have 6 photographers all shooting in the same area and you will see six different visions.
Half the fun of these trips is the time (usually set aside each day) when everyone gets together to show their photos and get critiques from the photo lead and others in the group if they want. It is just amazing to me to see what others got and I learn a lot from this.
