There is one more drain on the toll system that hasn't been mentioned, yet. The monies from these toll roads is not going just to build and maintain the toll roads. Gov. Perry's big justification for doing this is that he can build up the state's general fund with the money the companies pay to Texas to lease the tollroads. That means that people driving on the toll roads are paying for State pet projects all over the State, even places far removed from where the drivers will ever drive.

I am not happy with the idea that my driving the toll roads is funding projects that have nothing to do with the tollroads.

I'm not happy that my Federal Income Tax is being used to support a Cheese Museum in upstate NY, but I live with it. ( it's a pretty nice little museum by the way).

I use the toll roads on I10 when I need them. Getting from Katy to the Texas Medical Center for NILMDTS is a pita if there is traffic.

I'm wondering what the moral of that story is?

As a member of a representative republic, I have a right to work for changes in the way the government charges and spends its money. I see the tollroads as a scam. They offer a nice road, as bait to get you to fork over your money for much more expensive projects that you likely won't ever see.

This lie is so old it's crusty! I remember my uncle griping in the late 1970s the the Dallas North Tollway was supposed to be made free after it was paid off.

I'm a radical. I believe absolutely that the entire concept of tollways should be banned. It's a transparent excuse for a taxing authority to have unlimited access to your wallet. Here in Houston, the recently completed I-10 expansion, which was paid for by taxpayer funding, now has toll lanes. What's up with the taxpayers subsidizing toll lanes, huh? What's more, the toll is shown on an illuminated sign and the amount of the toll changes depending on the time of day it is. Of course, it's highest at the busiest times of the day.

The taxing authority, in their magnanimity, have granted the use of one lane to HOV vehicles, but it's restricted to two narrow time bands each day, Monday thru Friday. The rest of the time, it's toll only. This is what I especially object to. If I'm in an HOV vehicle, I should have access to those lanes that were paid for by taxpayer funds whenever I want it.

Pisses me off just thinking about it.

For those HCTRA fans. I just read that the planned renovation of 290 will include turning the Hempstead highway into a toll road.
