I think there's an unspoken 'software conflict' with certain PC's and apple software.
Maybe it was my oldish computer, i dunno. My friend has a newer laptop with Vista on it and he never has problems.

I think the sync idea is stupid too. But I suppose it's a necessary evil with the iPhone given the software/firmware on the phone and other apps.

I am referring to other devices which the computer simply sees as a logical drive. Simply grab a file, drop it in the appropriate folder on the device. What could be simpler?

The irony is that Apple invented drag and drop....

syncing is great for things like calendars, offline email. Photos and MP3, not so smart.

You can drag n' drop and manage your folders manually with iTunes as well. Just go into your preferences, and on the Advanced panel untick the checkboxs for "Keep iTunes media folder organized" and "Copy files to iTunes Media folder when adding to library."

This way, when you drop a file onto iTunes it simply adds a link to the library, and the file remains in its original location. Works great when your media is on a file share.
