I think that they did it to put more bodies on the front page, to force the POTUS hand on making a decision on the troop surge in Afghanistan.

More bodies = his fault for not doing anything.

It's a smart move on their part...

And the media depends on the soldiers to keep their a$$'s safe - wasn't there a reporter recently that they had to go in and save after they had REPEATEDLY told him not to do something? I think they should have let him get the benefit of his choices.

Everything that embedded journalists produce goes through military censors before it's released to make sure that they don't reveal important strategic things like exactly where soldiers may be (I'M LOOKING AT YOU GERALDO RIVERA) and things like that. This has included killing any photos of American casualties.

Now, independent war photographers are not bound by those restrictions, but they also don't have as much access or the US military watching out for them and letting them ride in their armored vehicles and things like that.
