Cool If you are trapsing around the country side outside of Austin - 10-21-2009, 10:33 AM

And you hear a deep growl that just may be a MOUNTAIN lion! Talked to a cousin that I have not seen in years yesterday and he lives about 40 miles north of Austin and they have confirmed a female mountain lion and 2 cubs is wandering in the country side outside of Taylor. The state says that mountain lions have officially only been seen in the Big Bend area but that is FALSE. In fact he said that a friend saw a large male a few weeks back with a deer in it's teeth just west of Austin.

So if your trapsing around some raw land/creeks and you hear that deep distinct growl that ain't no overgrown bobcat.

A couple years ago, I was hunting near Seguin (Guadalupe River Bottom) on a friends farm and we were in the brush after dark. We heard one "scream" about 60 yards away. Needless to say, we hurried out of there.

The next week a juvenile male was spotted on the farm in a field during daylight hours. The cats have a large territory. So, they aren't only in the big bend area. When you're out in the weeds, always pay attention

This cat was doubley confirmed when a neighbors teenage kid hit the garage door opener and saw the cat laying in the drive way about 20 ft away- he closed the door very quickly and went back into the house.

With all the deer and wild pigs running around there is plenty of food for the cats to live on and since they are breeding there are males around and more being made.

So don't think that there are just bobcats out there because the big brothers and sisters are around.

Back 120 or so years ago they roamed up past Ft Worth since Ft Worth had a nickname of something like Panther City at the time because someone saw one sleeping in the street during one of their visits.

I think it is cool, just be careful when out in the country especially jogging in wooded/high grass areas where the cats like to hang.

My mom says that friends of hers who live out in the country have seen them in NE TX (around Longview) but I find that a little hard to believe. I can believe they're making their way into the hill country though.

What is this nonsense of mountain lions are only in the Rio Grande area? The local newspaper published a cell phone photo of a puma (aka "mountain lion") carting off a duck it caught in the pond at Hall Office Park in Frisco several years ago.

Incidentally, what kind of animal, I guess about 30 lbs or 50 lbs, eats a fruit that contains large seeds, like pumpkin seeds? I ask, because I've seen its poop lying around several places in Richardson and Garland. I suspect this is a coyote, but I don't know that they eat vegetative matter.

We could use a large predator. The pig population sucks. Very destructive critters. We could also donate a few deer to keep the big cats healthy and well exercised.

My cousin lives in a new dvelopment (streets laid out and all that) that has not been built in yet (his lot is over an acre in size) and the city or someone is going in and cutting the high grass in the undeveloped lots, this may be on the West side of town towards 35.

Thanks. That's far enough from me that I should not have to worry about it too much.
