Prolly a student or academic discount. Also, not sure if it's ONLY the upgrade or the full operating system.

AVOID upgrading if possible!

Working for IT company is nice too, I have an actionpack subscription so my W7 pro is free. We got 1 copy of Ultimate, but the boss put it in his desk and called it off limits.

However, after using both for the last few months in the beta and RC program, I can tell you with all honesty that Pro is as good as Ultimate. The only 2 things Ultimate can do are pretty useless to me:

1. Change between 35 languages on the fly.
2. Encrypt folders on the fly.

Upgrade is the same as the Full OS, and XP users get to do a clean install with the upgrade. win/win for me :)

Hrm.. I need to find a student who wants to use their id to buy a copy for me, hahaha. I am running the release candidate, and I think it's good for a few more months at least.

I'm gonna wait until I get my 160GB Intel SSD from Amazon before I do a new install (right now I'm running a Vista->Win7 upgrade). Installing from flash drive to SSD drive should be pretty quick though, thanks for the link.

Been running XP Pro for years. I might actually do the W7 upgrade.

John - As long as Win7 supports your current hardware I totally recommend it. My pc's been running like a champ with Win7RC for months now.

And thanks Lee.. I kind of thought it was March, but couldn't remember.

I've been thinking of the SSD route - actually - my husband is the one pushing it... he thinks it'd make photoshop/lr faster...

It is under consideration... lol.

Why did you end up deciding to do it?

For those of you running W7, how easy it to put files where you want to, to sort them or view them as you want to? I'm concerned that that the intuitiveness that was given to Office has been transferred to the OS, W7.
I ran W2K and loved it. I've used XP is okay, but not a step up from W2K. Vista, which I had no choice about, is a pain. What has W7 got that makes it worthwhile moving to. The Houston Chronicle said if you had XP and like it, stick with it. Why should I change Os's?

Mainly for me I like the UI much better than Vista, it's quite a bit less resource hungry than Vista too, so your current hardware works better actually.

Not to mention as a plus from XP > W7 is the multi-core support and additional improvements in speed and such.

I wouldn't say that W7 is up to Linux/Unix/FreeBSD as far as security, but it's much more secure than XP when it comes to contracting malware / spyware.

But really and truly, if you like what you got and don't want to change, then don't. If it ain't broke don't fix it.
