I have been seeing that a lot of Photoshop users also use Lightroom. Why? Is Lightroom and Photoshop competing or complementary products? What capabilities and/or features does Lightroom provide that Photoshop does not provide and vice versa?

Lightroom is also a cataloging software which helps you rate and sort images, although for processing you just have the camera raw options. Where Photoshop is a much more powerful editing software but ends there you also need to open every individual file you wish to work. Also Lightroom is completely non-destructive.

Once you work Lightroom into your work flow, you'll wonder how you got along without it. Batch stuff in, batch it out, sorting, cataloging and that non-destructive RAW processing. Once you get used to using it, Photoshop becomes a really good plug-in.
Download the trial and look up a few tutorials and give it a try.

I own both and use both, but over the past two year I noticed the ratio changing drastically. Lightroom 1 my ratio would be about 50/50. Then Lightroom 2 was released and it made my life so much easier. These days it's 80% LR & 20% PS. Why? Graduated filters, Adjustment Brushes (Dodge & Burn), Post Crop Vignette, and creating wonderful super easy online galleries to name a few.
Lightroom was specifically built for the photographer in mind.

Lightroom is a great tool to edit, fix, rate groups of photos, individual photos, etc... Color balance, make additional virtual copies of photos and do various edits, adjustments and colors.... and then process .jpg'-s, slide-show, or web gallery.
Google Lightroom and watch some of the video's. There are quite a few in iTunes store for free.
You can get Version 3 trial for free to try it.

I was a die hard CS2 & CS3 Bridge fanatic. It actually took me about 6 months before I saw the 'light' and fully converted to LR. LR drastically cut down my post processing times and increased my workflow.

Lightroom is really the first kind of sophisticated cataloging I've used. I cannot stand sorting through all of the photos I have on my hard drive that were taken before getting lightroom.

LR FTW!
I'm more like 95% LR now. PS is just for smoothing and cloning on select images for me.

I use both. But PS is only used if I need to do something particular. LR has cut my post processing down dramatically.
