What do you think of the photos? Specifically, what do you think he was trying to accomplish with the particular tack he took here? (The super harsh lighting, contrast, etc.)

Personally, I am intrigued by the photos, but they seem like so far beyond reality it leaves me wanting to know what these people _actually_ look like.

I've seen that style before. It can be moving, but I personally think it's a bit too much. Tone down the contrast just a little, please. The photo essay was nice. I especially liked reading some of the stories behind the people.

I recently had to shoot a 101 year old man who is still working as a lawyer. It was for a magazine story on active centenarians. It really made me think about life...

I like his photos. He explains that he first began with the idea of simply photographing people who looked unusually worn, due to the hardships they had faced in life. So, it makes sense that he would photograph people in harsh light, to accentuate their facial features.

Thanks to Geni.com, I now know that the average lifespan of the men in my family over the last 250 years is about 52. I'm 43. Yeah. OTOH, several recent men in my Mom's side of the family have lived into their 90s, and both of my parents are in their 60s.
