This guy was at a furniture auction and bought a box of unprocessed negatives (close to 40,000). Check out the story and what he found.

Amazing. Makes you wonder how many potentially great photographers were never found.

Amazing photos.

I wonder what she was thinking while she took some of those photos!
They are an amazing set. Image your life as you see it through your camera! That is my kind of diary.

Wow, her work is beautiful. Such a shame he didn't get to meet her before she passed. Great story.

Amazing stuff. I try and put myself in her position as she shoots and admire her even more. Fascinating find. Too bad he missed talking to her by a matter of days...

seriously! I clicked on the link, expecting to see more average, blah, crap... but, wow! You can see her thoughts and feelings in these images. It would've been great to follow her around.

There is something about shooting inconspicuously from the hip. I wish there was a modern digital camera that had a waist level viewer.

I would love to have a smaller camera that did that.

The original Nikon Coolpix (900-995) did just that and I used it that way (or held overhead) quite often. They weren't real small but much smaller than a dSLR.

I really like Vivian's eye. Many of her photos are a wonderful step up from snapshots, even when just posed family stuff, because of her great sense of framing.

You should be able to do that with any of the cameras that have an articulating LCD.
And Ken, I loved my old Nikon 995. It was my first digital camera, and that swivel was great. You could have it down at your chest and be looking at it like you were just messing with the controls or viewing photos, but actually taking them instead.
And the third option is what I have installed on my Pentax K20D. It's called a "Flip bac", and it's a mirror that swivels down or sideways. I really like it. Besides waist level with live view, it also covers the screen in places where you don't want your lcd to show. I've been in a few dark concerts where anyone taking a photo lights up their lcd like a small TV screen, and draws a lot of attention. So with this I can discreetly peek to check exposure, and then leave it closed while I shoot away. And my nose sweat doesn't get on the screen either. I shoot left eyed.
Here is a link, but I bought mine at Adorama.

And here is what it looks like installed on my Pentax with live view on.

Sorry to re-hijack, Tom, that is pretty neat!I bet it helps if you need to check your make up too. Here's a link to their website: flipbac.com

There's always the canon a620/30/40, that have articulating screens. The a640 even comes in discreet black.

One of my first digital cameras, the Sony Mavica FD-91 had a great, huge (for the time) articulating LCD. It was great, unless your subject was in color/far away / moving / indoors.

Amazing treasure. I love old vintage black and white photos. Sometimes I wonder if the photography is really that much better or if its simply the love of vintage black and white. She definitely had a unique perspective and eye and captured some great images.
