Anyone shot in San Diego? - 10-29-2009, 01:11 PM

Hey gang,

Heading out to San Diego and I'll only have one weekend to shoot. I'll be looking for some good sunset shots up in-around La Jolla and I'll have a rented Canon EF 300mm f/2.8L IS for ??? I'm thinking the Zoo, but not sure.

Any suggestions for locations for good surf sunset shots and any recommendations to put that 300mm lens to use?

Thanks,
Roy

The 300mm will be overkill for the zoo. I got by fine with my 70-200 and most of the time I was at the wide end. But for sunsets, I can't say. I just visited the zoo, gaslamp district and Coronado on the way out of town.

The Zoo, Balboa park, the Gaslight District all good areas. Zoo is part of Balboa Park so those can be done similar time.. there is also just the short trip down to Tiajuana if you want to go there.

Yea, I was thinking Zoo myself. Really, 300mm overkill? Last time I use a 300mm was the f/4L IS at the San Antonio zoo and I'm glad I had it...got some really great shots. I almost reserved the 100-400 f/5.6 but I'm unsure of the IQ difference between the 100-400 and 300 and of course, I'd love to be able to shoot with the 300.

Go out to Point Loma to the lighthouse a a good shot of the sky line of San Diego and the ocean. Coronado Island would also be a good place. La Jolla also would be good for sunset pictures.

I would agree with this, why the Zoo? Nothing against it, but don't you have one locally you can go too or a least within a few hours drive? If it were me, I'd been looking for something I can't shoot locally like the pacific ocean and surfing or Venice beach or something you wouldn't see in your neck of the woods. Just my 2 cents, but most of all, have FUN!

When I saw the subject line I was thinking to myself... "yes, everyday". There are always shootings in SD. :-)

But yes the SD Zoo is a great place and a lot of cool street stuff around LaJolla shopping and restaurant area. Always interesting characters around.

just to live just 45 minutes north of San Diego. The Zoo is world class, nothing like it. If you go to La Jolla, then go by Scrips (they have Aquariums and tide pools to die for, you wont regret it

San Diego zoo is one of the top 3 in the nation, perhaps even #1 or 2. And, it's beautiful and HUGE. You can easily spend an entire day from opening to closing at the SD zoo. I don't know what kind of camera you have, but a 300mm might be a tad overkill on a crop sensor, but perhaps pretty good on a full frame camera.

I agree with everyone else for places to shoot in San Diego.

Beach/typical San Diego = Coronado

Nightlife = Gaslamp District

Sunset = La Jolla cliffs, Coronado, Del Mar

People/culture = Pacific Beach, Mission Beach

Balboa Park and UC San Diego have a plethora of photo opportunities, including people, architecture, animals (the park only, of course )

Embarcadero is nice, as well as across the bridge in Coronado. You can get a nice downtown skyline shot of the city from the Coronado ferry pu/do point.

La Jolla is charming - you'll find plenty there. Also love Coronado and the Del. You'll have plenty of options and I think you'll find the 300 is great for the SD Zoo. Have a great time!

Roy, One more...

DH and I went up in an open-cockpit Biplane and took a bunch of photos. The pilot flew over the ocean for us and also over the wild animal park.

The fog rolled in while we were flying over the ocean. The views were incredible.

Check it out here.
