Wedding giveaway - 11-04-2009, 09:58 PM

Well I've been co-hosting this contest to give one lucky couple a free wedding here in Lubbock. I have put in tons of hours of work to get this thing going and now we are in the last couple of days voting. We went from 22 couples and are now in the top 6.
I hate that it is a popularity contest so I thought I would spread the word a little. If you would like to vote for who you think is the most deserving please do at www.lubbockdreamwedding.com

If you want to know from a business stand point if it was all worth it, pm me and I'll tell you all about the trials and tribulations and the benefits.

Thanks and be blessed.

LOL It had to be said! I got 1 couple out of the initial 23 that had no kids but then they pulled out of the contest because they didn't like the Wedding date that was set.

My wife and I are a mixed couple so I voted for Brenda and Champ as well. Besides they have already been together 14 years so they are more likely to appreciate it more (I think).

Popularity contests suck! IMHO

Why keep it a secret? I'm sure many people, including me, would be interested in your first hand experience with this type of thing.

I feel like some opinions are better kept in private conversation. :) I'm sure anyone on the net can see this thread.
I am pretty sure I will never do it again. The amount of work that has gone into it was not worth it....so far anyway. Last night I interviewed a lady for a wedding that found me from the giveaway.(she is the only business I have got from it) I hope she books. She is also interviewing the lady who is doing the flowers for the contest & booked the Barn that is our venue so a Win Win Win!
It really is a great way to get to know your fellow small business owners. Talking to the many many people I've called, we are all in the same boat. They all have seen a drop off in business and they are all wondering how to get it back.
All and all I really wanted to give back to my community, do something in a time when it feels like you can't get a break. So I guess in that I (we) accomplished something :)

My biggest failure was in the advertising. We wrote several articles to several papers and got one line published in the last paragraph of a column in the business section. The radio wanted me and 5 other sponsors to sell them 100 gift certificates ($50 value each) of service for them to advertise anything about the contest. I made fliers but the people who said they would hang them at the college did not.

Anyway I tried it, I tried it in GRAND style and now I know.

Thanks for sharing your information on the contest. Sounds like a tremendous way to give back.

Tom, having kids before the wedding means you have a go-to person for flower girl or mini ring-bearer.

My wife and I met in Lubbock when we were both working at the Avalanche-Journal, but we got married somewhere else and weren't blessed with kids until about four years later.

I vote for Brenda and Champ. I'd like to think that after 14 years they will beat the odds for the long haul, but experiance has taught me differently.

I voted to Joe & Whitney. From all the couples, they sounded like the only ones whose idea of "giving back" took actual effort. And, they've already officially gotten married, which to me, indicates they know the difference between a wedding and a marriage.
