Very hectic right now. It sounds as though all the suspects are apprehended/dead, but businesses and schools are locked down until everyone is sure this is not a wider spread coordinated effort/attack.

Lead suspect is Muslim, and upset about being deployed to Iraq. My nephew was here today and got a call that the post was locked down. More information, suspect was recent convert and made comments about Muslims rising up and destroying the infidels in Muslim lands.

That may be a contributing factor. They also reported he had a bad OER (evaluation, we used to call them OERs) and he recently reported a hate crime as "Allah" was keyed into his car. Lots of things going on, but still, this was a mental health professional. He was someone who was supposedly trained to help people deal with this.

Apparently the suspect lives as well as a female "first responder" initially thought dead... http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,572305,00.html

He needs a visit to Texas Death Row, pity that it will be Federal Death Row, Texas does it quicker. Coward. Fortunately my nephew was here today on leave from Fort Hood.

My brother in law (and sister) are stationed in Ft. Hood. Brother in law was outside the Soldier Readiness Center, just off his shift, on the phone with my sister when it all "went down". She works at CTC (Central Texas College) and was on lock down till around 5pm.
They are both home safe, off post. Just waiting to hear word from friends not yet accounted for.
It was a long and intense day for my other sister, myself, and my parents. We were scared.

I also still have friends I am waiting to hear from. It's agonizing.

I'm still praying for y'all. Praying for the first responder who stopped the killing. Can't seem to pray for the shooter yet.

I heard from my friend. She was at the commissary on lock down all day. Best place for her to be, since she is a diabetic.

It was a surprise to hear the shooter was alive. I hear today he is paralyzed from his wounds. His surviving is unusual. It will be interesting to hear of his motivation. I'm guessing he just snapped, but that is based on nothing specific.
Some misconceptions out there seem to be that the military should have have him on the radar for a mental condition, and that every soldier is armed, so how could this happen? Soldiers don't walk around with weapons, they can own them as Hasan did, and he seemed to be one of those who would evaluate a soldiers condition. I suppose many wouldn't look to the doc first. He may have been suspected of some internet postings on bombings, I have heard, but those weren't confirmed to be his and supposedly happened before coming to Hood. andyz added 2064 Minutes and 31 Seconds later...Double Post Merged Below
Without starting a new thread on this topic in general, I was surprised to see several yearbook photos on the Austin Statesman website that were in part captioned with "High School yearbook photo provided by Prestige Portraits by Lifetouch in Woodridge, Ill."
Would you think the family would have consented to the release? I assume that would be a courtesy, but Lifetouch or the Prestige Portraits had the copyright. I guess I just haven't seen this before.

My mom lives in Killeen, (I'm one of the few native Killeen-ites!) but thank goodness she didn't have any reason to be on post at the time, she works at an elementary school off post. My hubby and I have friends who are still stationed there (we were both stationed at Ft. Hood when we were in the Army), but all have been accounted for.
I was upset when I heard about this, still am, really. Ft. Hood has always been home to me, been a safe and protected place. As much as our soldiers have to deal with when they're in a combat zone, they shouldn't have to look over their shoulders when they're at home. I'm a Desert Storm vet, but Iraq and Afghanistan are very different than what I experienced. | | | | | Thread Tools | | | | Display Modes | Linear Mode |
