I like the advice of carrying your media cards with you. I sure wish the photo who lost her laptop had backed up her photos though.

I hope they get these guys.

Unfortunate. But the fact that the one lady had her only copy of her entire image library on the laptop that she carries around with her day-to-day strikes me as incredibly stupid. A 'pro' should know better than that.

I normally back up when I reach the hotel, but sometimes there's one or two stops in between so I leave my equipment tucked inside the vehicle. I'm going to have to re-think my procedures.
1. Take equipment with me during the stops.
2. Leave equipment but remove cards from camera and take with me.
or 3. Don't make any stops prior to backing up.

I was in Italy last month and felt someone shadowing me. Sure enough, every time I'd turn to look the individual would stop and make believe he was shopping and viewing the store fronts. About two blocks later I abruptly turned to him, looked at him and took his photo. He disappeared after that. We must follow our instincts, but also be overly cautious these days.

I was thinking the same thing...why would she have ALL of her images on JUST HER LAPTOP? What if it ever crashed?

While it isn't hard to carry $20K of gear, that sounds like a pro, but I agree the failure to backup is less than amateur. Everyone knows to back up. Sometimes it may take a month to do it, but multiple backups at multiple sites is the way to go.

There was some irony in the TV crew losing gear after doing the story on the photog losing gear.

most people in utah are not pros. people are notoriously cheap there and look just at the price. then there is the issue with how digital has impacted the market. most well known photogs there will have one price for utah (cheaper) and another price for work outside of utah (higher). check out jonathan canlas. nonetheless i digress...

backup, backup, backup. i have to talk to my wife about this all the time. download the pics, backup to the external hd and burn to dvd. it's a wonder how she survived before she met me.

sucks that people have no regard for others material things...theft makes me so mad. sucks this happened to a wedding photog. ironic it's in utah...

Looks like she had her backup hard drives with her too, "But what hurt even more was the loss of her laptop and her hard drives."
I know I carried my hard drive on vacation with me to back up vacation pics, but it was packed away in a big suitcase and not with the laptop. Still, I carried my camera into resturants and stores to prevent such theft.

I had two questions. One is the same as you all... why doesn't she have her stuff backed up?!? Two, why was she shooting a wedding on a wednesday? Is that common? I've done fri, sat and sun weddings, but never a wednesday wedding!

my wife and i were married on a wednesday in utah. i would say getting married on a weekday is uncommon in utah, but it's not unheard of. besides, there are lays of couples getting married during the summer and during the winter (school breaks). tons of kids get married while they are in school, so they tend to do it between semesters. then there is the issue of where they want to get married. a lot people like to get married in the salt lake temple, it has deep symbolism in the LDS culture (took 40 years to build and they did it all by hand out of granite). they say the salt lake temple pumps out over 100 marriages/day on average.

so, short engagements (3-4 months), small time frame (especially between fall and spring semesters) and wanting to get married in SLC all equals a lot of weddings on weekdays. it's weird, if one were to live in SLC (which rocks btw, regardless of your faith) for 6 months, they would understand...
