How Do I Get My Birth Certificate? - 11-07-2009, 12:49 PM

A long time ago, in a place far, far away, I was born. I believe I was born aboard a Navy base in California. Any idea how to get a copy of my birth certificate, so I can get my passport?

It should be recorded in the county in which you were born...Contact the county courthose there to get a certified copy...Unless of course you happen to be our illustrious President, in which case you can only produce a certificate of live birth...Ben

In Texas, you would contact the county clerk in the county you were born in. In California ????

In Texas you can also go to the Department of Health. Again, in California, I'm not sure, but if you need another lead, maybe?

In California you contact the County Recorder. If it was Alameda Naval its Alameda County and if its Moffet NAS its Santa Clara County. If it was a different Naval base, I'm not sure.

As others have said, the contact is the county where you were born. Many counties allow this sort of thing to be done on-line on their official county web site. Also, it is not a bad idea to get more than one official copy; then if you ever need to supply an original you still have a back-up in your possession.

In addition to a copy of your birth certificate, you will need two pictures. The State Department has specifications for the picture dimensions and content. They do not accept Nudes.

This is the same site that I was directed to when I was trying to get my certificate from Fresno County. Got mine in about a week also.
