Why do people look, but dont comment?

I added up all the views and replies on a random showcase section and there were 3,430 views, to 259 replies. Thats 3,171 times that threads were viewed with no response.

Do we have THAT many lurkers?

There are a lot of lurkers. When I go to a thread and view an image, then read the comments, if I have nothing to add except +1, then I don't comment. If I go to a thread and find a link instead of an image, 97.4% of the time I leave the thread immediately. If a thread has more than two or three images, I usually don't comment. And lastly if the image appears to me as little more than a snapshot and it would take several paragraphs to list what I think needs improvement, then I don't usually take the time to comment. The few times I have commented "Nice snapshot" I caught flak, so I learned to not do that.

could you, or better yet, would you read 3,000+ comments about a post? Hell, I wouldn't want to read thru that many comments.

I like to look at all kinds of pics, but I am not going to have all that much to say constructive about pet photography or macro photography.

If I can't add value to what has already been said, I keep my mouth shut and my keyboard silient. If it sucks so back you can't even give suggestions without offending, I keep my mouth shut.

In addition to what was said, if I post, I get notices that it was updated when there are subsequent posts. So I go back and read, and go back and read, etc. That may be one post, but upteen views.

Sometimes you can't just a thread by its title, either. If it turns out to be something I'm not actually interested in I'll move on.

I think it's hard - sometimes the suggestions and feedback are so awesome, that I can't give you anything more that hasn't already been said. I figure that if someone wanted to tell me something that was negative - then they'd take the time to point something out.

So 3K, with 200+ comments....I'd take that as a win, win.

1. I'm one of those people. Most of the regulars on the forum are light years ahead of me in both knowledge and skill. It would be ludicrous for me to think that I could offer constructive criticism to you. Rather, I form my opinions of what I see, and then I check them against what others say.
