I have a 550ex flash unit that is missing the IR cover on the front. Not a huge deal, functions perfectly well even with it missing. Fast forward to a shoot I was doing around a pool with the flash in one hand and camera in the other connect via shoe cord. I lost my footing and had to drop the flash so that I would not drown. Water completely filled the unit from top to bottom entering through the hole where the IR cover used to be. Flash was toast. Removed batteries and let it air dry in the heat. Still wouldn't work. Made it back home a few days later and decided what the heck... Put it on the dash board of my truck in the middle of July and let it sit there for two days of baking in the extreme heat.
loaded up batteries, and viola! It was back to life.
Thank goodness for the dry Panhandle of Texas Heat that absolutely ate up the moisture left in the unit.

Nevermind -- I'll take care of it myself!
