Non-profit looking for logo help. - 11-10-2009, 08:37 AM

A good friend of mine and her husband started a non-profit, 501(c)(3) corp, to raise awareness of Congenital Heart Defects. She has the basic idea of a logo, but is looking for a volunteer to help her fine tune it without going overboard. I don't feel qualified, but perhaps someone here could take a look at what she started with and could make some suggestions.

Her website is up, sans logo, at http://www.blessherheart.org/default.aspx

I originally attached her prototype, a 3-leaf clover of heart-shaped leaves, but took it down as I can't verify its ownership. I think she'd like to keep the colors simple to keep printing costs down on the informational pamphlets and fundraising materials.

From her email to me:

"Here is the logo that we like for Bless Her Heart. I am not an artist. I would like to keep it simple.

1) We need to incorporate the org name into this picture somehow.
2) As far as colors, I was thinking brown and pink.....but I am open to other colors. Our website is brown and pink. I need the logo for reciepts, shirts, website, recycle bags, etc....

There is really no budget for this. Everything so far has been donated or paid for out of their own pocket (including the legal fees to set up the corporation with proper documentaion and filings). So anything a fellow member of the forum could do would be appreciated.

I have a kiddo who was born with a congenital heart defect (TAPVR, repaired by Dr. Fox at Cook Childrens in 1997), and I'm originally a graphic designer. I'd be willing to help on the logo front, but would be no use as far as legal stuff...

Edited to add: Given the beautiful photo on the front page of the website, perhaps a butterfly with heart-shapes in the wings would be better than a clover?

She and her husband got all that taken care of. I was amazed when they told me how much they spent to get that done right.

Read their story and cried. :( If my daughter were not at school, I'd be lovin' and huggin' on her and she'd be going, "Ew, mom, quit. You're dripping on me."

Just sent Vi an email.

Great story and awareness is key! In hand with the logo work being done and spreading the link, might I also suggest that you suggest to them to utilize all the social media sites available to them, facebook, twitter, keep their blog up to date and the such.

Just a thought

My normal reply to requests from not-for profits after working for one for five years is that "just because they are not for profit doesn't mean they don't have any money !"..

Except of course in a case like this one.
I hope some Graphic Guru steps up and helps them out.
It looks like they are taking things in the right direction.
If they need photo help in Ft. Worth, give me a call.

And its a great one. Vi recently opened a twitter account and they are working on what their content/messages/tweets will be. Mostly a fact-a-day, plus what's going on as they raise funds or participate in forums or panels. Also, any endorcements or major correspondence or cooperations. She's also on FB, so I think she will be adding a group there and a blog. Its been pretty exciting talking with her over lunch or a quick call about it. As I hear more, I'll let you know.

Thanks, Tom, I'll let Vi know!
You know, your reaction is very heartening to me, as I am very close to their situation, and would otherwise have many of the same thoughts. Its coming up on the anniversary of those events for the first time next month and I expect it will be very difficult. Having accomplished so much with the charity in that year will be a comfort.

This is a quick Illustrator doodle I just sent to her, kind of a four-leaf clover with a butterfly body in the middle :)
