Gaahh.. don't ever use P&S as a SD Card reader - 11-10-2009, 01:49 PM

So just got back from a cruise from Cozumel (almost being eaten up by Ida). Back home, I decide to dump all my photos from my SD cards... but couldn't find my card reader or my dslr, but had my SD1000 P&S laying around... so plug it in using a usb cord, pop the SD card in, copy the photo folder to the computer, repeat on all cards. I was shocked at the speed, it dumped 8 gigs quite fast.. didn't expect so from a P&S. I thought sweet.

After every card copy, I glanced real quick on the thumbnails and open a few pics to make sure the photos were copied, them promptly go on and clear the cards.

A while later, decided to post process some photos. This is when I go

All my raw files are missing. The jpegs are there, but no raws. I check the setting on my camera, L+RAW... so wtf. After some fiddling around, I realize that the SD1000 camera doesn't really work like a card reader... it displays the file structure and all the other files from the card EXCEPT cr2 raw files. The copy was so fast because it was only copying the JPEGs earlier.

I manage to recover 2/3 of the raws, but still :(

Oh no! Well, it could have been worse. Maybe the JPEGs will be good enough to work for any RAW files you end up missing.

Download Recuva - then have it - with your CARD reader - recheck the cards.

If that doesn't work and the images are important - buy Recover My Files - I've brought back documents & images that I wished I had NEVER seen from friends computers when they forgot to pull items off before reformatting the drive. Idiots.

But it'll recover just about anything...

Ditto Donna - as long as you haven't re-written over the files, they are still on the card, you just need a recovery program to get them off.

When you delete a file, you actually don't even touch the file, you are simply deleting the pointer to the file, basically editing the table of contents without actually ripping pages out of the book. Recovery programs will go through each byte (page) and see what's in it and if it's got a proper pointer, and if it doesn't, it will create one for you.

Thanks Cajungaltx and epoh

I used testdisk for nix yet another recovery program, managed to get them back. Unfortunately I had copied another set of photos to give to a friend to the last card... no possible way to recover already rewritten blocks.
