I've travelled with my equipments and tripod. My tripod was always carried externally attached to my camera case.
I've never had any issues with TSA. Although, some airports' TSAs might do a thorough look over my gears. So, make sure you allow plenty of time to check in.

I travel a bit with my camera equipment. I have a smallish tripod that fits into a back pack and have had no problems, except trying to translate "tripod" into french when they showed me the screen and asked what THAT was.

The interesting thing is that EVERY single time I've carried my camera bag (Tenba Pro12 ) they have pulled it aside and used the explosive detector on it

I have been refused by TSA to carry on my monopod and tripod. They said the grounds were that it could be used as a club. Since then I have checked everytime. Good luck!

Just like smalltown newspaper editors, the screeners are looking for a Watergate-sized item so they can be heroes.

My thought was that if the monopod has a retractable metal spike, that would be an issue only if the screeners found it.

I've carried on a monopod and a Slik tripod together in the Slik case and never had any issues. I also have been checked for explosives numerous times even before TSA existed for some reason.
