Kid Safe Chemical Act - 11-16-2009, 09:25 AM

http://www.ewg.org/kid-safe-chemical...chemicals-act/

The video is worth the 22 minutes.

Let's try to keep this thread from becoming too political. This presentation is a few years old, but the Act seems to have stalled in Congress. It still will give you something to think about, especially those who have little kids, or those who may be having one.

We should be able to discuss things going on in government without it being an argument or flame fest.

We don't need this act. We just need to think of those chemicals as evolution in action.

I am surprised that any of you old folks survived life without the internet and the overload of conflicting information and opinions about most items.

I am surprised that any of you lived without baby food from a jar

I am surprised that you survived riding a bike without a helmet.

I am surprised that you lived after driving in the back of a pickup truck

The list goes on and on. I live in moderation, if I acted on every video posted or stance on one thing or another I would be crazy.

Moderation.

A lot of the 'old folks' were born before they had to worry about exposures to most of these toxic chemicals. They have become more and more prevallent in everything people use, so "moderation" isn't so easy anymore.

Did you watch the video?

What is wrong with attempting to get some responsibility for chemicals before they enter the marketplace?

the problem with the law is that it's retro-active. and would put virtually every single second-hand store out of business. And charities would no long be able to accept to redistribute children's clothes or toys because there's no way they could afford the test. not to mention if there are any local toy makers or home-based clothing makers. all of them would go out of business.

No i didn't watch the video. As far as I am concerned it is nothing more than a "commercial" by a PAC for a particular view.

Good that you can make that judgement without actually viewing. They aren't asking for anything other than reform of an outdated government standard.

How many local or home based buisnesses are using toxic chemicals? They are talking about having the checmial creators take resposibility. DOW chemical sure can afford too long before their chemicals reach small manufacturers. Not sure I follow how it applies to donated clothes. Would you want second hand items available for people that is coated in fire retardent or other toxic substances?

The problem is we do not know what the effects of these chemicals are because they were never studied.

Alright, first let me aologize if my tone seems to be getting hostile. I wanted to post this video to provide people with something to think about. The facts presented are interesting, especially to those with kids.

Probably none, but this law would require them to PROVE that and test for it. The cost is overwhelmingly prohibitive. Also, all infant/children pj's have a flame retardant in them, as of today. It's been like that for quite a while now.

True, and I am not opposed to studying them, or banning them in future products. I am only against setting up overwhelming barriers to small resale and home-based businesses based on assumptions and worries.

I agree. I think there should be ways to implement it without hosing small buisnesses.

as in many cases, the underlying science is fundamentally flawed. BPA is but one of many victims of bad science mentioned in the original post's link.

Here is some reality:

http://stats.org/stories/2009/good_b...s_nov6_09.html

http://stats.org/stories/2009/Consum...A_nov2_09.html

It should not be a political issue. It is a science issue that has become politicized.

Unfortunately what is always lacking is an unbiased party to do the work. No matter who does the testing, there will be some reason for belief that the data is skewed, which it very well may be.

I think it's a bad idea without even reading it, as I'm wary of any legislation for the alleged purpose of protecting children.

Either the Constitutution, your wallet, or both will be the victims.
