Question uhhh... - 11-19-2009, 10:24 PM

Is photography a right brain, or left brain based art?

You know, I used to think I was pretty creative. Now I'm starting to thing that I just suck! Its like someone put a box on my head.

Why does the 'eye' come so naturally for some people?

step 1: drive into FW
step 2: hang out around UTD until you find a drug dealer
step 3: buy some acid
step 4: (important) DONT touch your gear whilst tripping your balls off
step 5: use all your crazy ass brand new ideas and go shoot some stuff
step 6: ignore anybody that gives you advice that involves taking acid

Photography is a mix of art and science, so you can keep both sides of your brain busy if you want. Art is what you make of it. Maybe you can dedicate more to effort to creative imagery and care less about technical details. I know that's something I need to do.

I apparently have a mental inability to tilt my camera. All those years of photojournalistic work makes me want horizons to be straight, even when a slight tilt might enhance an image!

I think it's both.

Because it is both technical & artistic.

Every artist, "Photographers, musicians, art, sculpturer" etc. eventually hits a plateau. And if you speak to anyone that's high on their game "no pun intented" will most probably tell you they hit many a plateau to get to were they are at. Go with it, it's part of the curve and part of the fun! Can't par every hole, but you damn sure try!

Hmm. I scored 10-8 in favor of right, but on probably about half the questions what I really wanted to answer was "Neither" or "Both" or "Who Cares". So I'm not sure what that really says about my brain dominance....

Right: 0
Left: 18

This result is quite surprising to me, since I'm left handed (Although I can perform many tasks equally well with my right hand).

The conventional wisdom seems to be that left handers are predominately right brained, but according to this I'm completely opposite of that. Maybe that makes sense though, because I've honestly never thought of myself as particularly artistic...
