Time-lapse photography - 11-28-2009, 10:46 AM

One of the members of another forum I frequent, does time-lapse photography. I thought y'all might enjoy seeing his work. These are not videos, but rather, individual pictures that he strings together. He said on average, he takes about 350-400 frames per sequence.

Enjoy

What equipment is needed to produce time lapse photography sequences like the one above?

I've been experimenting with some time lapse stuff lately too. Nothing as fabulous as the above link though. Here's how I do it, and a link(s) to some of my stuff:

Sturdy Tripod
Canon 40D 18-200mm IS
EOS Utility software on my laptop
USB cable

Put the camera where you want to frame the scene, set to manual focus (this avoids passing cars changing focus). I set the camera on P, or AV, TV to account for the changing lighting conditions.

The EOS Utility has a built in time lapse function. Set it to the interval you want, set the number of pictures you want it to capture and let it do it's thing.

Choose all the photos from the sequence and import them into any number of programs that will create a 'slideshow movie'. I use Picasa which has a function that will create a movie from all your slides, and has the ability to adjust time, add music, some simple titles, and easily uploads it to Youtube.

And some results:

YouTube - Sunrise in the Fog - Timelapse in HD

YouTube - TimeLapse2

YouTube - That Big ol' Lighthouse in the Sky

Regards,
Sean

Wow! I love Reel #3....especially the airport segment of it. Great choices in music to set the mood. His intervals seem to be setup to be very small....maybe 5 seconds between shots if that.

I live near the airport and have been trying to figure out how to capture the airport in time lapse without attracting too much unwanted attention.

That was wonderful! I love the shots of the night sky against the landscape, and the broad shot of the city shows it pulsing with life.

Once upon a time you could buy P&S cameras and video cameras that did this all by themselves. No computer required. Way back in the woods even. Nothing new.

Camera makers only include functions that most customers want and will pay for. That's why cameras can put heart-shaped frames and silly captions on photos in-camera, but can't do time-lapse photography.

Holding a price point is my expalnation for dropping features. Like aperture blades. From 18 to 5 in my collection.

Cool link David!

Here's a very short clip I did using the TC-80N3 interval timer on my 20d.

I think some of the Nikon DSLR's still have built-in interval timers. I had to buy the timer from Canon

While we are on the subject, here's some insane time-lapse clips using a dolly and motion controlled heads:
