what happened to telephone manners... - 12-02-2009, 06:24 PM

just ranting...

in my day - i was taught the proper way to ADDRESS a phone call was to identify yourself.. as in

"hello or hi - my name is whatever, may i speak to?"

i am sick to death of all the charity and other phone calls that begin with - hi - is janet there? like they know me.

hi - is janet there?
yes
can i speak to her?
who is calling..
i'm looking for janet, is she there?

JANET GOES OFF ON CHARITY CALLER for not being polite and identifying herself. i may have actually donated, i often do...but the hairs on the back of my neck stand up when i get one like this.

ugh!

Janet I agree and is one of the reasons I have caller ID and unless I know the number the phone doesn't get answered.

The caller MUST identify themselves or they don't get to first base with me. I have a sister-in-law that thinks everyone should recognize her voice and it makes her mad when I insist that she identify herself. I tried that voice recognizition thing with a brother-in-law and called him by his brother's name. They didn't get along so well. Ain't gonna do that again. Identify yourself when you call me, period!

Oh, that annoys me to no end! I was taught wonderful telephone manners and to use a persons name when talking to them. So it annoys me when I have to ask "Who are you?". When I answer any biz phone, its always, "Thank you for calling (biz name), this is Heather, How may I help you today?"

I agree, but the thing that makes my blood boil, is when they cannot pronounce my last name. So i say to them to call back when they can. I had one call back with in an hour or so, and he got it wrong, again.

Hey, if that's all it takes to get to first base with you, you are easy!

This is one of my pet peeves. So much so that I have taken to irritating the bejesus out of them when I bother to answer their calls. It usually goes something like:

Hi is Richard there?
Yep this is he, do I know you?
some form of rambling answer
May I ask since you don't know me nor I you, what gives you the right to refer to me as if we are old friends? Did anyone ever teach you that this is considered rude behaviour?
Usually before I finish with my diatribe they become flustered and hang up. Great way to stop the calls too, been woking for a long time.

we had a girl, who no longer works for us, that would call me and when I answered the phone just say "Hey"...like I was supposed to know who she was. I finally instructed her on the proper way to use the phone, and she stopped calling me period...lol...guess it's win/win there :D

Janet, beyond them not identifying themselves, I take exception to them calling me by first name. I think at a BARE minimum,a Mr/Mrs/Miss Soandso would be better if they are wanting to appeal to your good graces..

I get "Is Thomas there?" (All my friends call me Tom. I use Thomas professionally, because Tom Campbell is the name of a famous photographer- does a lot of Shark Week stuff and other things for NatGeo and Discovery.)

I like to correct them and say, "This is Dr. Campbell."

Having yet to start a doctoral program, I am still a few credits short.
