Photography School - 12-06-2009, 10:34 AM

Hello all,

I am new to this forum and new to the world of photography with a DSLR. My wife and I are looking for a continuing educations class for beginning digital photography or any type of photography school. I live within an hour of Austin, Bryan / College Station, Temple, Brenham and was looking for any information you may have. I found one in Austin at Austin Community College but was to late on getting enrolled, due to my work I can only take a class from Jan till May. ACC only had 12 spots and they filled up quick. Any info you have will be helpful.

Thanks Rodney

ACC would have been my first recommendation. CTC in Killeen has a camera course periodically but hasn't for the last session or two and I didn't see it on thier spring list either.

You can look at some online classes as they may meet your long term schedule. Eclipse Photography Institute is one of the banner ads I've seen here on TPF. Then there is NYIP for longer term learning, BetterPhoto and others for short classes. Basocally, there are a lot of online options if you don't mind the distance learning.

You might check out the Rocky Mountain School of Photography weekend seminar that is coming to Austin early next year. It's just a weekend, but it's reasonably priced, and as a beginner you will learn a ton of stuff. Plus (if it's still like previous years) they give you a big workbook along with the class that has even more info that you can refer to for years to come.

while you are waiting to enroll, i would say get out there and start shooting!!! you can learn a fair amount about photography through trial and error. then go to the library if you need books.

Thanks, i have taken some on-line classes but you don't get as much out of them as you do in a class room. May have to resort to that though. We do get out and shoot whenever possible and do alot of reading on the forums, which has a wealth of information. Just thought I would ask and yes the Rocky Mountain School of Photography weekend seminar sounds great. Thanks Rodney

Rodney,

There are seminars all around you at least monthly.
Go to Texas Professional Photographers, Affiliates to see all the local associations that have monthly meetings with seminars that usually last 1-2 hours.
The PPA convention is in January. It is an intense and packed full of information for three days that will have you buzzing for weeks.

By far the best school in the country is right here in Texas. Texas School of Professional Photography, this year in Addison, North of Dallas. Texas School of Professional Photography Six days of instruction with one photographer. Talk about depth.

You don't have to go out of this state to get quality photographic teaching.

I went to school for photography in the 1970s. But I did not learn how to make money with what I knew until I started attending the monthly meetings. The connections you make with other photographers are priceless.

I agree with the list Beachsaint gave you. A couple of other great schools are Brooks Institute in California. Daytona Beach Community College has a two-year program that is highly regarded. I know some graduates of the Savannah College of Art and Design that say it is a wonderful program.

I'd check with the instructors of the photography classes before you decide to take any. Here in SA, they'll sit you down in front of a computer loaded with Photoshop and tell you to click around for a few hours a week. I dropped a class that was like that and my wife just finished a class like that.

YMMV
