A day that will live in infamy. I thought one of the most interesting things I saw at the D-Day Museum in New Orleans was a copy of FDR's famous speech. That line was handwritten in - by FDR - not his speechwriter.
We visited the Pearl Harbor Memorial 2 years ago and it is very moving. I think about my dad's best friend's older brother, a young man from a small town in Louisiana, who was a newly commissioned officer, having graduated top of his class at Harvard Business School and his officer class. His academic achievements allowed him his pick of assignments. He picked Pearl and, at the time, who wouldn't have? He had been there two weeks. He attended a dance in town the night of December 6 and his friends urged him to stay in town and return to his ship in the morning. He declined, saying he had things to do early in the morning. The rest, as they say, is history. His name was one of many on the wall. W. S. Savage, Jr., Ens. RIP. You are not forgotten.
My dad with at a movie with Walter's brother when they got the news of the attack. To this day, my dad still gets choked up talking about it.
