Question about the classifieds - 12-08-2009, 11:23 AM

Why do so many people ask for the buyer to pay the pay pal fees? Not only is it against pay pals TOS but its the buyer's responsibility to pay.

What about those of us who buy without using PayPal???????????????? We save a buck or two.

PayPal violates my TOS.

I have no idea why. I like to make it easy on my buyers. I factor my price, shipping and PayPal into one price.

It's all about the marketing... Price it at $9.99, then add shipping, handling, insurance, fuel surcharge, etc. and it's now what the seller wants to receive $99.99

Seriously, the way to go is price it at what you need to sell for and offer a discount for a face to face cash transaction. Shipping is something different because of the unknown cost, but everyone should be able to add the simple 3% for the brokerage fee. YMMV.

why would it matter to you?

I sell an item that I would sell for $500, bumped up to $515 to make up for the paypal fees.....

gas stations do it all the time, they just price cash and credit differently

Because it is the sellers duty to pay the pay pal fee's, not mine, and asking for they buyer to pay fees is against the TOS.

As a seller, you can set the price with or without the fee. I would normally eat the paypal fees. The buyer doesnt have to buy if they are not liking the fees associated with the item.

It is against PP's TOS, but I have only seen a few forums list in their rules that the PP fees are not to be passed on to the buyer. With that said, so the buyer can set a price with the fees and nobody will know.

Not only that, the buyer is paying for it one way or another. Either they tell you you're paying for it or don't. It's just a state of mind and possession of a tidbit of information.
I always work it into the total. Unless it's a local deal and the buyer wants to use PP, then i don't think it's too much to ask for them to cover it. Or split it at least.

If it offends you, don't buy from them.

The intent is to save the non PP buyer a little money, not penalize the PP user.

But as has been pointed out. Strict enforcement will cause the sellers to increase the price to cover the fee.

Would a 3% discount for cash offend you? Its the same thing.

I usually try to bargain a bit anyways, but its not to penalize the pp user at all. You are using a service to your own benefit, it just seems a little wrong to me to not pay it.

If you shop at Specs, then you may notice that they do it to you all the time, except they reverse it to make it look like THEY are doing you the favor. They make it look like you are getting a discount if you are paying cash, but what they are really doing is charging you extra to make up for the credit card fees if you pay with credit. Same thing with me... if you pay with paypal, there's one price, and if you want to pay me cash, then I'll give you a little discount ;-)

Let me try this one more time.

The buyer pays it no matter what.

It is either added to the price beforehand.

Or added as a tack on.

Either way the seller takes part of the money he gets from the buyer and pays that fee.
