Welcome to my world... Ever hear about the ISO1600 incident at high noon while enjoying coffee with the rest of the DFW photogs? YEEEAAAAHHHHH.... its embarassing when your alone in your studio... let alone with 20 or more fellow photographers around.
Matter of fact, I still do it from time to time, and did it just the other day.

Do you have the overexposure indicator turned off?
Chalk it up to experience. We've all done it or are lying about not.

It's why I now use the 'reset' feature before a new shoot.... 1000 ISO session....and it was a NILMDTS session.... I realized about half way into it. Corrected it...and have yet to forget again. Fortunately it was a session where softening was needed for editing the little one - so it didn't hurt me.

you'd think as many times as I have done it, I wouldn't forget it again... however you could staple it to my forehead with a nail gun and I'd still forget. I have a ritual of going down the 4 buttons on the back side of my camera to make sure that I change the WB and ISO... but I even forget THAT from time to time....

Better than realizing it only after the shoot is over! Unless your exposures were way off, they should be salvageable, esp. if you were using your D700. | | | |

I had that same problem when I started using my D-90. The ISO was not locked in when in the A,S or P modes. I just had to know why I keep finding myself shooting at ISO 1600.
