Anyone share an office with someone who, at lunch, goes away and then brings a ton of smelly food back to your office and proceeds to slop through it like a starving pig?
They're either stupid in that they do not know they are offending and replusing their office mate with this behavior... or they're just a jackass and have no manners and crappy parents who brought them up that way!
This is a rate and a rhetorical question all rolled into one!

I had a roommate who, when he would eat, sounded like a cow chewing his food. You could hear him over a jackhammer and bulldozer fighting. I don't know why he ate that way, but I never did find a good way to bring up his disgusting eating habits... Kinda hard to tell someone that they eat like a cow.

Most people, I think, are self-centered and don't care how their actions affect other people. Your co-worker also could've driven too fast to the restaurant and back because "it's all about me." No matter that it could cause a wreck that hurt or killed other people. No matter that it could simply make someone angry to be cut off in traffic.

is he a fat guy? if so he probably has trouble breathing and eating at the same time, and in this case he is unaware that his "eating sounds" are repulsive, if you just be honest with him and let him know that it bothers you i think things will work out, if he takes offense to it then its not your fault, it is hard for people to look at themselves sometimes

He's a nice guy but I think he just was brought up with really poor manners.

He's in great shape. It's just an "upbringing" issue I think. In no way, would I attempt to broach the subject with him. A good working relationship is much better than me having to leave the room when he eats.

Either way... it makes me ill and I just have to leave. Good guy other than that though.

I went into the break room to get some water. I'm off coffee, so none for me.
Someone from down the hall had just gotten finished pouring the last cup of coffee. She puts it down as she sees me and says "Oh, did you want coffee?" "Nope, I quit." "Good, then I don't have to make the next pot."
Jackass, what about the other people on our floor that pound out the coffee all day? Now they have to brew it and sit and wait 15 minutes while it brews because you wouldn't do it as you leave.

In answer to the more general question posed by the thread title, I think there are a fair number of both jackasses and stupid people in the world, in addition to more than a few stupid jackasses. Personally I think stupidity is no excuse for inconsiderate behavior. The fact that one doesn't know any better, does not make such behavior any less annoying.
On the eating thing, I'm fortunate enough to have an office so I don't have to hear anyone eat; but there are some folks who manage to stink up the whole floor with their food (the smelly fish dishes are the worst). I keep a can a spray air-freshener in my office for when it gets really bad.

The development environment is great (even though it is always nice to have your own office... which I could if I asked) but the food issue is over the top.
Oh, and people who clearly are annoying the hell out of others when they're talking on their mobile phones... walk out in the hall or grab a conference room!

| Don't get me started on phones. It's not just mobile phones, what about the ones who talk on speaker-phone with the volume maxed out and their office door open...
