Any techy types here? ver. virus help - 12-12-2009, 04:07 PM

I'm trying to get my little sisters computer working without reformatting the hard drive and I'm having a bit of a hard time. The virus is the internet security 2010 virus. It has disabled alt, ctrl, del. and crl, shift, esc. I also cannot access run > taskmgr or run > regedit. I also can't access any safemode or debugger boot up. Anybody have any ideas?

You can try pasting the following line into windows explorer.
C:\WINDOWS\system32\taskmgr.exe

Good idea, but nope. There is some sort of registry that isn't allowing task manager to be opened....

Hmm.
I know that sometimes these viruses rename or replace the regedit file. Have you tried searching for the regedit.exe?
If you find it, I've heard you can rename it and open it sometimes. At least you'll be able to enable the task manager. *hopefully*

ETA:
Have you tried any registry software? That might circumvent the issue.?.

Are there restore points set? If so, you can try to go back before the virus.

Gah! Its always the simple ideas that slip my mind. I am in the registry now trying to locate the keys associated with this (many expletives deleted) virus.

If you are running XP download a program called Dial-A-Fix, that should fix your registry/permission problems. Then download MalwareBytes AntiMalware and run it, that should get rid of the spyware infections (what you have is not a virus).j

It will save you a load of time and hassle if you just backup all the data, and do a fresh install of windows.

No fixer or cleaner will completely and cleanly fix what ever the malware has done to hose you system.

While that might be true, you can usually find the majority of the things wrong if you look long enough. Either way you're investing time but I HATE reinstalls. Especially when you've got to reinstall all the programs after you get the OS up and running. I just upgraded to Windows 7 and I forgot how much fun it was finding and installing everything again.

Behhhhh, I can get it off. I am sure there is a fix but you might need above average knowledge of windows and it's inner workings.

PM ME.

You could try rebooting from CD (if you have the XP disc) and then instead of installing a fresh copy do a Windows Repair.
