It's definitely a color movie, unless you saw it on a defective projector. Granted, it's a very stylized, low-saturation look but not monochrome.

The colors were a bit muted for effect, but there was color. IGN: 300 Movie Stills 1901090

I broke down and saw Avatar finally. As an anthropologist, though, I had HUGE and I mean HUGE issues with the entire movie. Then again, as an anthropologist, I have been taught to over analyze things (Don't even get me started on the whole Twilight series of movies). Essentially James Cameron took the book "Coming of Age in Second Life" and put it into a blender with the AAA (American Anthropological Association) stance on the Human Terrain System currently active in the War on Terror.

Cinematography, though, was excellent. Do I regret seeing it? Do I regret paying the extra money to see it in 3D Imax? Nope. I think Cameron could have found a more subtle way to get his message across, though.

With that being said, I also saw Sherlock Holmes yesterday... Now, there was a movie that held no pretension- simply a good movie to escape reality for a few hours.

So you missed the whole "all powerful men are in secret societies" message, along with the "all powerful men follow the greatest evil" message? I have seen several movies with this theme, I find it roughly the same through history. "All our evils are because of the people in charge", from the Crusades, to WWII, even today.

The movie was indeed enjoyable, but I found it no less preachy than Avatar, which I also found quite enjoyable.

Yes. It is Dances With Wolves In Space.

Go see it anyways. I hate most movies, yet I thoroughly enjoyed this one.

Seriously, I hate most movies.

I guess the critical difference, as I see it.... The whole "Secret Society" device has been used and over used lately that its become almost farcical.

Add me to the tolerated it, at best category for Avatar... I don't think any amount of special effects could have made it interesting... I saw it the night it opened and walking out, said "didn't we see this movie 20 years ago, called 'Fern Gully'?" (Hat's off to the people above who said the same...) - - western civilization military industrial complex vs. cute people with pointed ears and furry feet - - there are much better ways to tell the message that they felt they needed to tell. I mean, was there a single person among those of you that saw it that did not know exactly what plot devices would be used, how each issue or scene was going to resolve itself? You can forgo some aspects of good movie making for special effects, sometimes, and you can forgo some aspects of good movie making for a strong message, sometimes, but you can't abandon it completely just because you have great special effects and think you know the truth.

Americans spent $250 million over Christmas being entertained (and that's just at the movies).... imagine what could be done if we didn't waste money on trivial things.

Well it looks like he made his money back so expect a sequel within a year, bet he has a lot of it in the can (the people part) and was just waiting to see what this did at the box office before doing all the CGI work.

Won't be a year. Too much number crunching.

Thanks Westley! You earned your consultant's keep today. I'll spend my Avatar money on Belgian brewskis in Round Top.

Are you in Cornbread?

Actually, no, I never saw Fern Gully. I was thinking Medicine Man with Sean Connery.

Naw it won't take as long as the first since they now know what they did wrong and don't have to climb up that part of the learning curve again and he also has a trained staff to do all of the CGI stuff.

I would not be suprised to see the sequal before next Christmas.

Jeeze if it is just down to CGI work he can afford to buy more computer power and more bodies while if he still has to do a lot of Green Screen people in dot suits work that would delay it but like I said above I bet he has a lot of green screen/dot suit work already done.

These two twitter postings sum up my feelings on Avatar:
@jeffcannata "I feel sorry for the Avatar haters. The emotion that I feel watching it is why I love fantasy. Why I love movies. I wish they could feel it."
and
@marzrichards "Who's hating on Avatar? People with bones made of sad write to you with their inky tears sayin' they also hate sex and food?"
