Anyone know of a way to add mp3 w/o using itunes. This software want to erase my previous songs just to add 3 mp3's. There has to be a way around this. My mac does not see the device as an external drive:((

Have you tried mailing it to yourself? Then checking your mail on the iTouch and saving it from there? This is how I used to save individual photos...not sure if it works for music.

There is a way to have it scan your drive to import MP3's.
Now a note about that... it will NOT import copy protected MP3's.
One way around it that's a pain though, is to burn an audio CD with some other tool like Windows Media Player and then import that CD into iTunes

there is a third party ipod program that will dump your current IPOD direcory to your PC. It is called IDUMP. iDump - Free software downloads and software reviews - CNET Download.com It DOES work, but once you get your current MP3s off of there you can then hook up your IPOD to itunes and use itunes. you dont really have a choice of what software to use with an IPOD as far as I know. someone else out there may know of one I am not aware of.

Basically you're screwed with iToons.

The idea was to allow you to put DRM protected files from your computer to your device without infringing on the copyrights issues. There is no way to copy files off of your apple MP3 player. Period. That's their DRM solution.

Well, DRM has quietly died but Apple has left us with the iDIOCracy that is iToons. In a nutshell, almost any other MP3 player appears as a logical drive that you can drag and drop files directly onto (and off of). Not so with Apple's. You have to sync (truly satan's creation...) from a dedicated folder location.

What is more than ironic is that Apple INVENTED drag and drop yet their MP3 players are virtually the only ones that can't do it.

My solution? I have purchased a separate external HDD that is the library. Since my library of tunes is much larger than the 16gb iPhone, I can no longer have all of my songs on my player. I had to drop most of my classical music. The external HDD is large enough (320GB, 49.99 at Fry's) so that I can keep all my MP3 files as well as my selected pics (since I have to have a dedicated folder for pics, I can't just move a particular file to the iPhone....)

And be aware if you use an external HDD, you need to make sure EACH TME you plug in that HDD that it is the same drive letter (E:, G:, whatever) as listed within iToons, otherwise it will REMOVE all of your music, photos, ringtones, apps, etc.

And you can still only use that external HDD on no more than 3 computers at a time......

Ken, I really wish you would stop spreading false information as fact. In this case you are are 100% wrong. There is at least one third party application called Senuti (iTunes backwards) that can read your files from ANY iPod regardless of the DRM status of those files. I have not researched others, because Senuti has worked for me on more than one occasion.

There are plenty of forums where you can go bash Apple, iTunes, and the iPod. Please abide by the rules (#8) and bash elsewhere.

yes, most of them out there (don't know if I have looked at these in particular) still require syncing. They simply replace iTunes with another interface and sync application.

But I will be trying these since you listed them. Thanx

there is a program called Senuti (itunes backwards) that will remove songs from your ipod or iphone and put them in your itunes library.

Also with the majority of ipods you can check the manually manage music option and simply drag and drop whatever songs you want. My ipod classic that I recently sold was originally synced on a friends computer and I added tons of other songs from a variety of itunes libraries so it is not impossible or even that hard.

Yes, I searched google. I was looking for an easy drag and drop interface..
So I guess that I also must have a dedicated folder for photos also! No sharing among
MB and desktop. I can live with this though..
